Abstract

An antenna assembly for receiving the GPS signals in a global positioning system (GPS) receiver module automatically orients the antenna to better receive the GPS signals. The antenna is oriented by a positioner (e.g., a counterweight) that automatically rotates a frame on which the antenna is mounted. The GPS receiver module may also include multiple antennas oriented in different directions to maintain good reception of the GPS signals in any position. The multiple antennas are oriented in a manner so that the poor reception range an antenna is covered by other antennas. Signals from multiple antennas may be combined or chosen for processing by a GPS processor. Also, multiple GPS receiver modules may be deployed in close proximity so that wireless communication between the GPS receiver modules may be established. The GPS receiver modules with good GPS signals reception may determine its location and send its location information to the GPS modules with poor or no signal reception. The GPS receiver module receiving the location information from other GPS receiver modules may take the location as indicated in the received location information as its location or process the location information further to determine its location.

Claims (9)

1. A method of receiving global positioning system (GPS) signals in a GPS receiver module, the method comprising:

receiving GPS signals at a first antenna in the GPS receiver module, the first antenna having a first direction of maximum signal reception;

receiving the GPS signals at a second antenna in the GPS receiver module, the second antenna having a second direction of maximum signal reception, the second direction different than the first direction;

generating a sensor signal indicative of orientation of the first antenna and the second antenna by an accelerometer;

coupling the second antenna to a location processor and disconnecting the first antenna from the location processor based on the sensor signal;

coupling the first antenna to the location processor for processing the GPS signals and disconnecting the second antenna from the location processor after coupling the location processor to the second antenna and disconnecting the location processor from the first antenna responsive to the sensor signal dropping below the first threshold; and

coupling the location processor to the second antenna and disconnecting the location processor from the first antenna after coupling the location processor to the first antenna and disconnecting the location processor from the second antenna responsive to the sensor signal exceeding a second threshold level higher than a first threshold level.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensor signal is low-pass filtered.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first direction and the second direction are opposite to each other.
