Abstract

A bipolar electrosurgical instrument for clamping, grasping, manipulating, and sealing tissue includes first and second shafts each having a jaw member extending from a distal end thereof and a handle disposed at a proximal end thereof. The handle being operable to effect movement of the jaw members relative to one another from a first position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween. The bipolar instrument is connectable to a source of electrical energy having a first electrical potential connected to one of the jaw members and a second electrical potential connected to the other of the jaw members such that the jaw members are capable of selectively conducting energy through tissue held therebetween to effect a seal. Both the first and second electrical potentials are transmitted to the jaw members through the first shaft.

a distal connector disposed between the jaw members for electrically isolating the first and second electrical potentials, the distal connector including a donut-like mechanical interface that mechanically engages a distal end of the conductive lead.

2. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument for use in open surgery according to claim 1 , wherein a knife is disposed within each of the channels between the jaw members, the knife being selectively translatable within each of the channels from a first position proximal to tissue grasped between the jaw members to a distal position to sever tissue held between the jaw members.

3. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument for use in open surgery according to claim 2 , wherein the knife is made from a non-conductive material.

5. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument for use in open surgery according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a control rod for remotely actuating the knife.

6. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument for use in open surgery according to claim 5 , wherein the control rod is disposed along an outer periphery of one of the first and second shafts.

7. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument for use in open surgery according to claim 5 , wherein the control rod is disposed through a spacer within the pivot.

8. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument for use in open surgery according to claim 1 , wherein each of the jaw members includes an electrically conductive sealing surface and at least one of the jaw members includes at least one non-conductive stop member disposed on the electrically conductive sealing surface to control the distance between opposing electrically conductive sealing surfaces when tissue is held therebetween.

9. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument according to claim 8 , further comprising a non-stick coating disposed on the electrically conductive sealing surfaces.

12. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument according to claim 1 , further comprising a ratchet disposed on the first shaft and a complementary interlocking mechanical interface disposed on the second shaft, the ratchet and complementary interlocking mechanical interface providing at least one interlocking position to maintain a closure pressure in the range of about 3 kg/cm 2 to about 16 kg/cm 2 between the jaw members.

13. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument for use in open surgery, comprising:

first and second shafts each having a jaw member extending from a distal end thereof and a handle disposed at a proximal end thereof for effecting movement of the jaw members relative to one another about a pivot from a first position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween, the pivot configured to selectively receive a knife;

each jaw member being adapted to connect to a source of electrosurgical energy having first and second electrical potentials, a conductive lead connected to one of the jaw members providing the first electrical potential, and a conductive tube connected to other jaw member providing the second electrical potential such that the jaw members are capable of selectively conducting energy through tissue held therebetween to effect a seal; and

a distal connector disposed between the jaw members for electrically isolating the first and second electrical potentials, the distal connector including a donut-like mechanical interface that mechanically engages a distal end of the conductive lead.

14. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument for use in open surgery according to claim 13 , wherein one of the jaw members includes a recess defined in a proximal end thereof, the recess housing a knife therein and having a cam-like profile such that selective, distal movement of the knife deflects the knife into and through tissue held between jaw members.

15. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument for use in open surgery according to claim 14 , wherein the knife is made from a non-conductive material.

16. A bipolar electrosurgical instrument for use in open surgery according to claim 14 , wherein the knife is made from a conductive material and is adapted to connect to the electrosurgical energy source.
