Abstract

The present invention provides systems and methods for data storage. A hierarchical storage management architecture is presented to facilitate data management. The disclosed system provides methods for evaluating the state of stored data relative to enterprise needs by using weighted parameters that may be user defined. Also disclosed are systems and methods evaluating costing and risk management associated with stored data.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the characteristics data includes a number of data storage actions performed upon the one or more physical storage resources during a period of time.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

calculating a short-term performance metric based upon the characteristics data; and

calculating a long-term performance metric based upon the characteristics data,

wherein the single storage metric is calculated by summing the product of the the short-term performance metric and the at least one short-term weighting factor and the product of the long-term performance metric and the at least one long-term weighting factor.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the single storage metric is calculated for the one or more physical storage resources, and wherein the method further comprises:

determining a performance metric representing the network based upon the single storage metric and the second single storage metric.

11. One or more computer-readable storage media storing instructions that when executed by one or more computing systems, each computing system having a processor and memory, cause the one or more computing systems to perform a method for calculating a storage metric in a network, wherein the network comprises a storage operation cell hierarchy that includes multiple storage operation cells organized in one or more hierarchical relationships, the method comprising:

calculating, by the one or more computing systems, a single storage metric based on characteristics data and multiple weighting factors—

wherein the characteristics data is associated with characteristics of one or more physical storage resources in the network, wherein the one or more physical storage resources are associated with one or more storage operation cells of the storage operation cell hierarchy, and wherein a storage operation cell includes—
