Claims (79)

1. A method for a system administrator to broadcast an advisory communication to at least one remote unit, the method comprising:

accessing a website by a system administrator to send an advisory communication, the website comprising an audio-visual interface for inputting the advisory communication;

filtering a plurality of remote units by the system administrator operating the website, the filtering being based upon at least one information field to determine from the plurality of remote units at least one of a first remote unit and a second remote unit to receive a broadcast of the advisory communication;

assembling at least one packet of the advisory communication, the at least one packet comprising at least one of:

a first packet comprising a data message for the first remote unit, and

a second packet comprising a voice message for the second remote unit;

forwarding the at least one packet to a router for transmission

transmitting the at least one packet to alert at least one of the first remote unit and the second remote unit of the advisory communication; and

storing, by the website, a log associated with the advisory communication.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein at least one of the first remote unit and the second remote unit comprises a land line phone.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein at least one of the first remote unit and the second remote unit comprises a cellular phone.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the router comprises a base station controller.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the base station controller formats the at least one packet for the public switched telephone network.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising outputting the advisory communication via an audio-visual interface of the first remote unit.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the audio-visual interface comprises a status light.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the advisory communication is a weather advisory.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the advisory communication is a traffic update.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the advisory communication is an advertisement.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the advisory communication is a security instruction.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the advisory communication is a payment instruction.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the transmitting comprises using a repeater.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one information field comprises a geographical location.

15. The method of claim 14 further comprising using a global positioning system to determine the geographical location of the first remote unit.

16. The method of claim 14 further comprising using a physical address provided by a user to determine the geographical location.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one information field comprises a unique identifier of a user.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein the first remote unit and the second remote unit are operated by one user.

19. The method of claim 1 further comprising the system administrator accessing the log.

20. The method of claim 1 wherein at least one of the first remote unit and the second remote unit comprises a computer.

21. A method for a system administrator to send an advisory communication to a user of a remote unit, comprising:

accessing a website by a system administrator to send an advisory communication;

determining, by the system administrator operating the web site, a vicinity of a first remote unit and a second remote unit;

filtering the first remote unit and the second remote unit based upon the vicinity;

assembling, if the first remote unit is in the vicinity, at least one packet of the advisory communication comprising a header of the advisory communication, the header comprising a unique address of the first remote unit,

wherein the at least one packet comprising at least one of:

a first packet comprising a data message for the first remote unit, and

a second packet comprising a voice message for the first remote unit;

forwarding the at least one packet to a router for transmission;

transmitting the at least one packet of the advisory communication to alert a user of the first remote unit of the advisory communication; and

receiving a confirmation of receipt.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein the unique address is a phone number.

23. The method of claim 21 wherein the determining the vicinity comprises using a global positioning system to determine a location of the first remote unit.

24. The method of claim 21 wherein the determining the vicinity comprises using a physical address provided by the user to determine a location of the first remote unit.

25. The method of claim 21 wherein the receiving the confirmation of receipt comprises the router sending a confirmation packet.

26. The method of claim 21 wherein the receiving the confirmation of receipt comprises the first remote unit confirming receipt of the advisory communication.

27. The method of claim 21 wherein the receiving the confirmation of receipt comprises the user of the first remote unit confirming receipt of the advisory communication.

28. The method of claim 21 wherein the receiving the confirmation of receipt comprises storing the advisory communication in a log.

29. A method for a system administrator to broadcast an advisory communication to at least one remote unit, the method comprising:

accessing a website by a system administrator to send an advisory communication;

filtering a plurality of remote units to determine from the plurality of remote units at least one of a first remote unit and a second remote unit to receive a broadcast of the advisory communication;

assembling at least one packet of the advisory communication, the at least one packet comprising at least one of:

a first packet comprising a data message for the first remote unit, and

a second packet comprising a voice message for the second remote unit;

forwarding the at least one packet to a router for transmission;

transmitting the at least one packet to alert at least one of the first remote unit and the second remote unit of the advisory communication; and

receiving a confirmation of receipt.

30. The method of claim 29 wherein at least one of the first remote unit and the second remote unit comprises a land line phone.

31. The method of claim 29 wherein at least one of the first remote unit and the second remote unit comprises a cellular phone.

32. The method of claim 29 wherein the website comprises an audio-visual interface for inputting the advisory communication.

33. The method of claim 29 wherein the router comprises a base station controller.

34. The method of claim 33 wherein the base station controller formats the at least one packet for the public switched telephone network.

35. The method of claim 29 further comprising storing, by the website, a log associated with the advisory communication.

36. The method of claim 29 further comprising outputting the advisory communication via an audio-visual interface of the first remote unit.

37. The method of claim 36 wherein the audio-visual interface comprises a status light.

38. The method of claim 29 wherein the advisory communication is a weather advisory.

39. The method of claim 29 wherein the advisory communication is a traffic update.

40. The method of claim 29 wherein the advisory communication is an advertisement.

41. The method of claim 29 wherein the advisory communication is a security instruction.
