Abstract

A print engine assembly comprising an elongate chassis and a pair of bearing moldings operatively mounted to either end of the chassis. A rotatable platen extends between the pair of bearing moldings, the rotatable platen having more than one longitudinally extending surface region providing different functional operations. A printhead assembly is mounted to the chassis, the printhead assembly including an elongate printhead having a plurality of ink printing integrated circuits. A feed mechanism is mounted to the bearing moldings, and is configured to feed print media beneath the printhead during printing.

Claims (18)

1. A print engine assembly comprising:

an elongate chassis;

a pair of bearing moldings operatively mounted to either end of the chassis;

a rotatable platen supported by a rotary shaft, extended between and mounted in the pair of bearing moldings, the rotatable platen having more than one longitudinally extending surface region providing different functional operations;

a printhead assembly mounted to the chassis, the printhead assembly including an elongate pagewidth printhead having a plurality of ink printing integrated circuits;

a feed mechanism mounted to the bearing moldings, and configured to feed print media beneath the printhead during printing; and

two pairs of rails arranged on the chassis, and to which each bearing molding is respectively movably mounted.

2. The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the platen includes a first longitudinally extending surface region defining a support surface for print media, the first longitudinally extending surface region rotated opposite the printhead during printing.

3. The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the platen includes a second longitudinally extending surface region defining a capping portion for contacting the printhead, the second longitudinally extending surface region rotated to contact the printhead when the printer is not printing.

4. The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the platen includes a third longitudinally extending surface region defining a blotting portion to receive ink from the printhead, the third longitudinally extending surface region rotated opposite the printhead during a maintenance or cleaning operation of the printer.

5. The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the feed mechanism comprises a plurality of rollers mounted between the bearing moldings.

6. The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 5 , further comprising an external motor mounted to one of the bearing moldings and operatively coupled to at least one of the rollers.

7. The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the chassis is generally U-shaped, facilitating mounting of the bearing moldings to the chassis.

8. The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 1 , which includes a pair of spacers operatively arranged with respect to the printhead assembly and the chassis, to adjust an effective length of the printhead assembly.

9. The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a pair of biasing springs each extending from respective bearing moldings and into respective retention formations defined by the chassis, to bias the platen into a raised position with respect to the printhead.

10. The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the platen includes cams provided at each end of the platen to engage projections on each of a pair of spacers, the pair of spacers provided at each end of the printhead assembly.

11. The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 10 , including a motor able to effect movement of the platen away from the printhead along the rails and then rotation of the platen.

12. The print engine assembly as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the platen rotates to a position corresponding to one of the longitudinally extending surface regions being opposite the printhead and then the platen is moved towards the printhead by action of biasing springs.
