Abstract

Methods, articles of manufacture, and systems for providing access to a grid computing environment. In one environment, requests include resource specific criteria used to identify a particular grid resource to perform the request. In another embodiment, a request includes a queue criterion used to identify one of a plurality of queues on which the request is placed.

Claims (35)

1. A computer-implemented method of providing access to a plurality of grid computing resources available to a plurality of users, comprising:

receiving, from a requesting entity, a request containing (i) a specification of a function to be performed and (ii) a resource specific criterion comprising one or more hardware or software parameters;

identifying, from the plurality of grid computing resources, one or more specific grid computing resources that satisfy the one or more hardware or software parameters of the resource specific criterion; and

routing the request, by use of at least one computer processor, to the identified one or more specific grid computing resources.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the resource specific criterion includes at least one of the following: an operating system criterion, a central processing unit criterion, a memory criterion, and a hard disk criterion.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

performing the function using the identified one or more specific grid computing resources; and

returning a result to the requesting entity indicating performance of the function.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, prior to routing the request, determining availability of the identified one or more specific grid computing resources.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a price to be charged for fulfilling the request.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising charging the price for fulfilling the request.

7. A computer-readable storage medium containing a program, which, when executed by a computer performs an operation for providing access to a plurality of grid computing resources available to a plurality of users, comprising:

receiving, from a requesting entity, a request containing (i) a specification of a function to be performed and (ii) a resource specific criterion comprising one or more hardware or software parameters;

identifying, from the plurality of grid computing resources, one or more specific grid computing resources that satisfy the one or more hardware or software parameters of the resource specific criterion; and

routing the request, by use of at least one computer processor, to the identified one or more specific grid computing resources.

8. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , wherein the resource specific criterion includes at least one of the following: an operating system criterion, a central processing unit criterion, a memory criterion, and a hard disk criterion.

9. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , further comprising:

performing the function using the one or more specific grid computing resources; and

returning a result to the requesting entity indicating performance of the function.

10. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , further comprising, prior to routing the request, determining availability of the one or more specific grid computing resources.

11. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 7 , further comprising determining a price to be charged for fulfilling the request.

12. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , further comprising charging the price for fulfilling the request.

13. A system, comprising:

a processor;

a memory containing a program, which, when executed by the processor, is configured to provide access to a plurality of grid computing resources available to a plurality of users by performing the steps of:

receiving, from a requesting entity, a request containing (i) a specification of a function to be performed and (ii) a resource specific criterion comprising one or more hardware or software parameters;

identifying, from the plurality of grid computing resources, one or more specific grid computing resources that satisfy the one or more hardware or software parameters of the resource specific criterion; and

routing the request, by use of at least one computer processor, to the identified one or more specific grid computing resources.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the resource specific criterion includes at least one of the following: an operating system criterion, a central processing unit criterion, a memory criterion, and a hard disk criterion.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the steps further comprise:

performing the function using the one or more specific grid computing resources; and

returning a result to the requesting entity indicating performance of the function.

16. The system of claim 13 , wherein the steps further comprise, prior to routing the request, determining availability of the one or more specific grid computing resources.

17. The system of claim 13 , wherein the steps further comprise determining a price to be charged for fulfilling the request.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the steps further comprise charging the price for fulfilling the request.
