Abstract

A self-balanced adjustable mounting system for a flat panel display. A display interface having a hollow, semi-spherical shell portion is attached to the flat panel display. The semi-spherical shell is formed with a generally constant radius of curvature. The center of the radius of curvature is disposed proximate the center of gravity of the flat panel display with the display interface attached. The display interface is received in a guide structure that has a bearing portion engaging the outer surface of the semi-spherical shell, and a second bearing portion engaging the inner surface of the semi-spherical shell through an aperture formed in the semi-spherical shell. The semi-spherical shell is guided between the first and second bearing portions so that the flat panel display and device interface are generally rotatable about the center of the radius of curvature of the semi-spherical shell. The display is self balancing in virtually any position in the range of travel of the device due to the location of the center of rotation proximate the center of gravity.

Claims (28)

1. An electronic display system for mounting on a fixed structure, the system comprising:

a flat-panel electronic display;

a support structure adapted to be attached to the fixed structure;

a device interface including a frusto-spherical shell presenting an outwardly facing convex outer surface and an inwardly facing inner surface, the device interface further comprising a flange extending radially from a periphery of the shell, the flange receiving the flat panel electronic display such that a center of a radius of curvature of the outer surface of the shell is disposed within the flat panel electronic display, the flange defining structure for receiving at least one fastener to selectively attach the device interface to the flat panel electronic display;

a guide structure operably coupled to the shell, the guide structure having a bearing portion engaged with the outer surface of the shell and a retaining portion engaged with the inner surface of the shell, the retaining portion including a non-resilient biasing structure for biasing the shell toward the bearing portion, the shell being selectively slidable between the bearing portion and the retaining portion such that the flat panel electronic display is selectively tiltable about a multiplicity of axes oriented generally parallel to the flange and extending through the center of the radius of curvature of the outer surface of the shell.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the non-resilient biasing structure is a threaded fastener.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the bearing portion comprises high modulus thermoplastic.

4. A flat panel electronic display system for mounting on a non-horizontal fixed structure, the system comprising:

a flat panel electronic display;

a support structure adapted to attach to the fixed structure;

a device interface portion including a frusto-spherical portion having an outer surface with a radius of curvature defining a center and a flange portion extending radially outwardly from the frusto-spherical portion, the flange portion having structure defining at least one aperture for receiving a fastener to couple the device interface portion with the flat panel electronic display device, the frusto spherical portion adapted to receive the flat panel electronic display so that the center of the radius of curvature is within the flat panel electronic display device;

a guide structure operably coupling the device interface portion and the support structure, the guide structure having a first bearing portion frictionally engaging and guiding the outer surface of the frusto-spherical portion and a non-resilient retaining assembly arranged so as to apply a biasing force for holding the device interface portion in engagement with the first bearing portion, wherein the frusto-spherical portion is slidably positionable on the first bearing portion so that when the flat panel electronic display device is coupled with the frusto-spherical portion, the flat panel electronic display device is selectively rotatably positionable in roll, pitch, and yaw, about the center of the radius of curvature of the frusto-spherical portion with substantially equal effort.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the frusto-spherical portion comprises a hollow shell having an inner surface, the guide structure further comprising a second bearing portion engaging and guiding the inner surface of the hollow shell.

6. The display mounting system of claim 5 , wherein the second bearing portion slidably engages the inner surface of said frusto-spherical portion.

7. The display mounting system of claim 4 , wherein the center of the radius of curvature is positioned proximate a center of gravity of the display so that the flat panel electronic display device and device interface portion are selectively rotatably positionable about the center of the radius of curvature in all rotational directions with substantially equal effort.

8. A flat panel electronic display system for mounting on a non-horizontal fixed structure, the system comprising:

a flat panel electronic display device;

a device interface including a frusto-spherical portion having an outer surface with a radius of curvature defining a center and a flange portion extending radially outwardly from the frusto-spherical portion, the flange portion having structure defining at least one aperture for receiving a fastener to couple the device interface with the flat panel electronic display device, the frusto spherical portion receiving the flat panel electronic display so that the center of the radius of curvature is within the flat panel electronic display device;

means for guiding the device interface such that the flat panel electronic display device is selectively rotatably positionable in roll, pitch, and yaw, about the center of the radius of curvature of the frusto-spherical portion with substantially equal effort;

means for attaching the device interface and means for guiding the device interface to the fixed structure.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the means for attaching the device interface and means for guiding the device interface to the fixed structure comprises a support structure.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the frusto-spherical portion comprises a hollow shell having an inner surface.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the center of the radius of curvature is positioned proximate a center of gravity of the flat panel electronic display device so that the flat panel electronic display device and device interface are selectively rotatably positionable about the center of the radius of curvature in all rotational directions with substantially equal effort.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the means for guiding the device interface comprises a guide structure, the guide structure having a first bearing portion frictionally engaging and guiding the outer surface of the frusto-spherical portion and a non-resilient retaining assembly arranged so as to apply a biasing force for holding the device interface portion in engagement with the first bearing portion.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the guide structure further comprises a second bearing portion engaging and guiding the inner surface of the frusto-spherical portion.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the second bearing portion slidably engages the inner surface of the frusto-spherical portion.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the non-resilient retaining assembly is a threaded fastener.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the first bearing portion comprises high modulus thermoplastic.
