Abstract

The present invention relates to a printhead assembly for a printer. The printhead assembly includes a mounting plate assembly for mounting to a chassis of the printer. An ink ejection printhead is mounted to the mounting plate assembly. A capping mechanism is mounted to the mounting plate assembly. The capping mechanism includes a capping member configured to cap the printhead. A carrier supports the capping member. An actuating mechanism is arranged to effect movement of the carrier back and forth between a first position at which the capping member is located remotely with respect to the printhead and a second position at which the capping member contacts the printhead.

Claims (17)

1. A printhead assembly for a printer, the printhead assembly comprising:

a mounting plate assembly for mounting to a chassis of the printer;

an ink ejection printhead mounted to the mounting plate assembly; and

a capping mechanism mounted to the mounting plate assembly, the capping mechanism including:

a capping member configured to cap the printhead;

a carrier supporting the capping member; and

an actuating mechanism arranged to effect movement of the carrier back and forth between a first position at which the capping member is located remotely with respect to the printhead and a second position at which the capping member contacts the printhead.

2. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the capping member includes a capping element which extends between and interconnects two end members.

3. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the capping element is channel-shaped having walls separated by a recess and is formed from a rigid material.

4. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the capping element has a length which is sufficient to space the end members apart by a distance that is greater than the width of print media to be moved past the printhead.

5. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 3 , wherein a surface of the walls of the capping element are provided with an elastomeric material lip to facilitate sealing against the printhead.

6. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the printhead includes a plurality of printhead modules mounted within a casing.

7. A printhead assembly as claimed in claim 6 , wherein each printhead module includes a unitary arrangement of:

a support member;

micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) integrated circuits (ICs);

a fluid distribution arrangement mounting each of the MEMS ICs to the support member; and

a flexible printed circuit connector for connecting electrical power and signals to each of the MEMS ICs.
