Abstract

An oven is used for cooking food and comprises an enclosure having a floor, a ceiling, a back wall, and a pair of side walls. A heating element is disposed on the back wall at a distance from the floor and the ceiling and a shield is disposed between the back wall and the heating element. The shield is configured to receive radiant heat from the heating element and to re-radiate lower frequency radiant heat towards the food. The enclosure may further comprise a door and the side walls may be double paneled. A radial fan is coupled to one of the side walls to pull hot air from inside the enclosure and cooler air from outside the enclosure. The hot and cool air are mixed within a space defined by the double paneled side wall and is directed out over the exterior of the door to cool the door.

Claims (18)

1. An oven for cooking food, comprising:

an enclosure comprising a floor, a ceiling, a back wall, and a pair of side walls;

a heating element positioned adjacent the back wall at a distance from the floor and the ceiling;

a shield disposed between the back wall and the heating element, the shield configured to receive radiant heat from the heating element and to re-radiate lower frequency radiant heat towards the food;

a spit assembly rotatably and removably disposed within the enclosure a distance from the heating element; the spit assembly comprising first and second spit rods interposed between first and second drive plates, wherein the first and second spit rods extend horizontally within the enclosure, wherein at least one of the drive plates include gear teeth disposed along an outer diameter;

a powered drive unit comprising a drive gear that engages the gear teeth and when actuated operates to rotate the spit assembly, wherein the spit assembly is removably engaged with the drive gear.

2. The oven of claim 1 , wherein the heating element is positioned adjacent the back wall approximately halfway between the floor and the ceiling.

3. The oven of claim 2 , wherein the heating element is a serpentine shaped electric heat coil.

4. The oven of claim 3 , wherein the heating element is supported on its left and right ends by heating element support brackets.

5. The oven of claim 4 , wherein the shield is removably held in place by the heating element support brackets.

6. The oven of claim 1 , wherein the shield is coated with a nonstick ceramic coating.

7. The oven of claim 1 further comprising vents disposed on the back wall of the enclosure, wherein the vents allow air heated by the constantly operating heating element to escape from the enclosure.

8. The oven of claim 7 , wherein the vents are upward facing louvers.

9. The oven of claim 1 further comprising a front door coupled to the enclosure.

10. The oven of claim 9 further comprising gaps between the front door and the enclosure, the gaps configured to help control the enclosure temperature.

11. The oven of claim 10 , wherein the gaps are disposed at the lower and upper section of the front door.

12. The oven of claim 11 , wherein the gaps on the lower section of the front door generally allow cool air to enter into the enclosure and the gaps around the upper section of the front door allow hot air to exit from the enclosure.

13. The oven as recited in claim 1 further wherein the spit rod assembly is substantially free of a structure extending from the center of the first drive plate and connecting to the center of the second drive plate, and wherein each of the drive plates comprises a plate-shaped member having an inner side, a peripheral boundary, and an interior area wherein the interior area and the peripheral boundary are positioned in two different planes.
