Abstract

A method of recovering hydrocarbons from water-containing hydrocarbonaceous materials can include forming a constructed permeability control infrastructure. This constructed infrastructure defines a substantially encapsulated volume. A mined or separately collected water-containing hydrocarbonaceous material can be introduced into the control infrastructure to form a permeable body of hydrocarbonaceous material. The permeable body can be heated sufficient to initially remove water therefrom as a water vapor. The water vapor can be removed from the infrastructure via an outlet which can be controlled or shut off when the permeable body is sufficiently dewatered. The dewatered permeable body can be heated sufficient to remove hydrocarbons therefrom. During heating the hydrocarbonaceous material is substantially stationary as the constructed infrastructure is a fixed structure. Removed hydrocarbons can be collected for further processing, use in the process, and/or use as recovered.

Claims (27)

1. A method of recovering hydrocarbons from water-containing hydrocarbonaceous materials, comprising:

a) forming a constructed permeability control infrastructure which defines a substantially encapsulated volume;

b) introducing a water-containing hydrocarbonaceous material into the control infrastructure to form a permeable body of hydrocarbonaceous material;

c) heating the permeable body sufficient to remove water therefrom in the form of water vapor;

d) removing the water vapor from the encapsulated volume via a water vapor outlet;

e) shutting the water vapor outlet at a time to prevent removal of substantial amounts of hydrocarbon vapors therefrom;

f) heating the permeable body sufficient to remove hydrocarbons therefrom such that the hydrocarbonaceous material is substantially stationary during heating; and

g) collecting the removed hydrocarbons.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the time is when hydrocarbon content of C6 or above exceeds about 5% by volume of total vapors removed via the water vapor outlet.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the water vapor outlet comprises at least one steam relief valve.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the water vapor outlet comprises at least one perforated conduit embedded within the permeable body.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising collecting the water vapor and separating non-water components therefrom.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising recapturing heat from the water vapor to provide at least a portion of heat for heating the permeable body.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the constructed permeability control infrastructure includes a substantially impermeable floor, a substantially impermeable cap, and substantially impermeable side walls which define the substantially encapsulated volume.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the constructed permeability control infrastructure includes a substantially impermeable floor, a substantially impermeable cap, and substantially permeable side walls which define the substantially encapsulated volume.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the control infrastructure is formed in direct contact with walls of an excavated hydrocarbonaceous material deposit.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the control infrastructure is freestanding.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising covering the permeable body with overburden sufficient to create an increased lithostatic pressure within the permeable body.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the water-containing hydrocarbonaceous material comprises tar sands.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the permeable body has a void volume from about 5% to about 50%.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of heating the permeable body sufficient to remove hydrocarbons therefrom includes injecting heated gases into the control infrastructure such that the permeable body is primarily heated via convection as the heated gases pass throughout the permeable body.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the permeable body further comprises a plurality of heating conduits embedded within the permeable body, at least a portion of the plurality of heating conduits are oriented substantially horizontally.

16. The method of claim 1 , further comprising introducing a reducing agent into the permeable body during the step of heating the permeable body sufficient to remove hydrocarbons therefrom, said reducing agent being capable of hydrogenation of the hydrocarbons.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the reducing agent is natural gas and conditions of pressure and temperature are sufficient to cause reforming of the hydrocarbons to produce an upgraded hydrocarbon product.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising collecting the removed hydrocarbons in a second constructed permeability control infrastructure to form a body of liquid hydrocarbon and introducing a reducing agent into the body of liquid hydrocarbon, said reducing agent being capable of upgrading of the hydrocarbons.

19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising injecting a selective solvent into the permeable body subsequent to collecting the hydrocarbons, said selective solvent being a solvent for one or more target materials.

20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising recovering heat from the permeable body and transferring said heat to a second permeable body.
