Door skin, a method of etching a plate for forming a wood grain pattern in the door skin, and an etched plate formed therefrom
View Patent ↗The present invention is directed to a door skin having an exterior surface with an woodgrain pattern formed therein, and an etched plate for use as an embossing plate or with a molded die set, for forming the woodgrain pattern in the door skin. The exterior surface has outer portions lying on a first plane, spaced grooves recessed from the plane of the outer portions, and halftone portions. The halftone portions have spaced protrusions defined by channels, wherein the channels are recessed from the plane of the outer portions.
1. A construction component, comprising:
an exterior surface having outer portions lying on a first plane;
a plurality of variably spaced grooves formed in said construction component and opening on said exterior surface, said plurality of variably spaced grooves recessed from the plane of said outer portions; and
halftone portions formed in said construction component and having spaced protrusions extending from said exterior surface, said spaced protrusions defined by a plurality of intersecting channels, said plurality of intersecting channels configured to simulate a wood tone, said plurality of intersecting channels recessed from the plane of said outer portions.
2. The construction component of claim 1 , wherein said outer portions, said variably spaced grooves and said halftone portions form a wood grain pattern.
3. The construction component of claim 1 , wherein said variably spaced grooves are recessed from said first plane from between about 0.003 inches to about 0.013 inches.
4. The construction component of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of intersecting channels are recessed from said first plane from between about 0.001 inches to about 0.003 inches.
5. The construction component of claim 1 , wherein each of said spaced protrusions comprises a top and side walls extending from a base of said channels.
6. The construction component of claim 5 , wherein at least some of said tops are coplanar with said first plane.
7. The construction component of claim 5 , wherein at least some of said tops are recessed from said first plane.
8. The construction component of claim 1 , further comprising a stain on said exterior surface, said stain retained in said variably spaced grooves and said channels.
9. The construction component of claim 1 , wherein at least two of said halftone portions have differing densities of said spaced protrusions.
10. The construction component of claim 1 , wherein at least some of said spaced protrusions have a square configuration.
11. The construction component of claim 1 , wherein at least some of said spaced protrusions have a cylindrical configuration.
12. The construction component of 1 , wherein at least one of said halftone portions includes variably sized spaced protrusions.
13. The construction component of claim 1 , wherein the construction component is formed from a material selected from the group consisting of sheet molding compound, medium density fiberboard, hardboard, fiberboard, and a thermoplastic material.
14. The construction component of claim 1 , wherein the construction component is a door skin.
15. The construction component of claim 1 , wherein the construction component is one of a molded construction component and an embossed construction component.
16. The construction component of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of variably spaced grooves have variable widths.
17. The construction component of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of variably spaced grooves have variable depths.
18. The construction component of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of variably spaced grooves have variable lengths.
19. The construction component of claim 13 , wherein said thermoplastic material is selected from the group consisting of polystyrene or polypropylene.
