Abstract

A surgical cutting and fastening instrument. The instrument comprises an end effector, a shaft connected to the end effector, and a handle connected to the shaft. The handle comprises an electric, DC motor connected to a drive train in the shaft for powering the drive train. The handle also comprises a power pack that comprises at least one charge-accumulating device connected to the DC motor for powering the DC motor.

Claims (24)

1. A device comprising:

a surgical cutting and fastening instrument comprising:

an end effector;

a shaft connected to the end effector, the shaft comprising a drive train for powering the end effector; and

a handle connected to the shaft, the handle comprising:

an electric, DC motor connected to the drive train for powering the drive train;

a removable power pack that is detachable and removable from the handle, wherein the power pack comprises:

at least one chargeable DC power source connected to the DC motor for powering the DC motor; and

a power pack memory for storing at least one operating parameter of the instrument, wherein the at least one operating parameter of the instrument comprises a number of firings by the instrument; and

a charger base, remote from the instrument, for connecting to the removable power pack when the removable power pack is detached and removed from the handle, wherein the charger base comprises:

a power source for charging the at least one chargeable DC power source of the power pack; and

a charger base memory for downloading the at least one operating parameter from the power pack memory when the removable power pack is connected to the charger base.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the power source of the charger base comprises an AC-to-DC power supply.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the power source of the charger base comprises at least one battery.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one chargeable DC power source of the power pack comprises at least one rechargeable battery.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one chargeable DC power source of the power pack comprises at least one charge-accumulating device.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the at least one charge-accumulating device comprises a plurality of series-connected charge-accumulating devices.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of series-connected charge-accumulating devices comprises a plurality of series-connected supercapacitors.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the power pack comprises a charge management circuit connected to the charge-accumulating devices for determining a charge level of the charge-accumulating devices.

9. The device of claim 5 , wherein the at least one charge-accumulating device comprises at least one supercapacitor.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the power pack comprises a processor connected to the power pack memory.

The device of claim 10 , wherein the removable power pack further comprises a RFID transponder for reading a RFID value of at least one replaceable component of the instrument, and wherein the power pack memory is in communication with the RFID transponder for storing the RFID value of the at least one replaceable component of the instrument read by the RFID transponder.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the processor is programmed to determine whether at least one replaceable component is proper for use in the instrument based on the RFID value of the at least one replaceable component of the instrument read by the RFID transponder.

13. The device of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further programmed to prevent the power pack from powering the instrument upon a determination that the at least one replacement component is not proper for use in the instrument.
