Abstract

A dialysis system includes: a water purification unit; a dialysate generation unit configured to use water purified by the water purification unit; a dialysate delivery unit configured to deliver dialysate prepared by the dialysate generation unit; a supplemental power source; a first electrical connection configured to electrically connect a branch power source with at least one of the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit; and a second electrical connection configured to electrically connect the supplemental power source with at least one of the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit.

Claims (36)

1. A dialysis system comprising:

a water purification unit;

a dialysate generation unit configured to use water purified by the water purification unit;

a dialysate delivery unit configured to deliver dialysate prepared by the dialysate generation unit;

a supplemental power source;

a first electrical connection configured to electrically connect a branch power source with at least one of the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit;

a second electrical connection configured to electrically connect the supplemental power source with at least one of the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit; and

a logic implementer programmed to (i) selectively supply power from the branch power source to at least one of the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit via the first electrical connection, and (ii) selectively supply power from the supplemental power source to at least one of the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit via the second electrical connection.

2. The dialysis system of claim 1 , which includes a third electrical connection configured to electrically connect the branch power source to the supplemental power source.

3. The dialysis system of claim 1 , which includes a switch placed in at least one of the first, second and third electrical connections.

4. The dialysis system of claim 1 , further including a disinfection unit, at least one of the first and second electrical connections further configured to electrically connect at least one of the branch power source and the supplemental power source to the disinfection unit.

5. The dialysis system of claim 1 , the logic implementer programmed to selectively allow the branch power source to charge the supplemental power source.

6. The dialysis system of claim 5 , the logic implementer programmed to allow the branch power source to charge the supplemental power source during a non-therapy time.

7. The dialysis system of claim 5 , the logic implementer programmed to (i) remove power from the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit or (ii) supply a hibernation level of power to the units when the branch power source is charging the supplemental power source.

8. The dialysis system of claim 1 , the logic implementer programmed to allow only the branch power source to supply power to the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit via the first electrical connection.

9. The dialysis system of claim 1 , the logic implementer programmed to allow only the supplemental power source to supply power to the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit via the second electrical connection.

10. The dialysis system of claim 5 , the logic implementer programmed to prevent the branch power source from charging the supplemental power source when the branch power source and the supplemental power source are powering the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit.

11. The dialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the first electrical connection is connected to one of the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit, and the second electrical connection is connected to the other of the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit.

12. The dialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the first electrical connection is connected to a first portion of the dialysate generation unit, a first portion of the water purification unit, and a first portion of the dialysate delivery unit, and the second electrical connection is connected to a second portion of the water purification unit, a second portion of the dialysate generation unit and a second portion of the dialysate delivery unit.

13. The dialysis system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second electrical connections is connected to at least a portion of at least one of: a dialysate heater and a water purification heater.

14. The dialysis system of claim 1 , wherein the supplemental power source is of a type selected from the group consisting of: a rechargeable battery, a capacitor, and a hydrogen generator/fuel cell.

15. A dialysis system comprising:

a water purification unit;

a dialysate generation unit configured to use water purified by the water purification unit;

a dialysate delivery unit configured to deliver dialysate prepared by the dialysate generation unit;

a supplemental power source;

a first electrical connection configured to electrically connect a branch power source with at least one of the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit;

a second electrical connection configured to electrically connect the supplemental power source with at least one of the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit;

a first switch operating with the first electrical connection;

a second switch operating with the second electrical connection; and

a logic implementer programmed to (i) open or close the first switch to selectively supply power from the branch power source to at least one of the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit via the first electrical connection, and (ii) open or close the second switch to selectively supply power from the supplemental power source to at least one of the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit via the second electrical connection.

16. The dialysis system of claim 15 , the logic implementer programmed to open the first switch and close the second switch to allow only the supplemental power source to supply power to at least one of the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit via the second electrical connection.

17. The dialysis system of claim 15 , the logic implementer programmed to close the first switch and open the second switch to allow only the branch power source to supply power to the water purification unit, the dialysate generation unit and the dialysate delivery unit via the first electrical connection.
