Abstract

A receiver for a differentially phase shift keying formatted optical signal, such as an RZ-DPSK formatted optical signal. Dither control loops are provided for controlling path length in a demodulator and/or for controlling the center wavelength of an optical band pass filter. A feedback loop is provided for controlling the gain of a pre-amplifier, and a method of protecting against optical transients by disabling a pre-amplifier is also provided. A preset delay may be provided to compensate for the differential delay in paths associated with the demodulator arms. When the signal is an RZ-DPSK modulated signal, a clock for retiming data from the optical signal may be derived from a signal on the data path.

Claims (17)

1. An apparatus comprising:

an optical power detector for detecting an input power level of an optical input signal and providing an output representative of said input power level;

an optical amplifier for amplifying said optical input signal;

a demodulator coupled to said amplifier for demodulating data from said optical input signal;

a forward error correction (FEC) decoder circuit configured to decode said data and to provide a fault indicator upon occurrence of a fault in decoding said data; and

a controller configured for receiving said output representative of said input power level and said fault indicator and disabling said amplifier only when said output representative of said input power level is below a predetermined threshold and said fault indicator is provided by said FEC decoder.

2. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said amplifier comprises an erbium doped fiber amplifier.

3. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said fault indicator is representative of an out-of-frame (OOF) fault.

4. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said demodulator comprises a Mach-Zehnder demodulator.

5. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein said controller is further configured for enabling said amplifier when said power level increases above said predetermined threshold.

6. A method of protecting against transients in an input signal applied to an optical amplifier of an optical signal receiver, said method comprising:

monitoring a power level of said input signal to said optical amplifier using a power detector;

monitoring a fault condition of a forward error correction (FEC) decoder for decoding data modulated on said optical signal; and

disabling said optical amplifier only when said power level is below a predetermined threshold and said fault condition of said FEC decoder is indicated.

7. A method according to claim 6 , wherein said amplifier comprises an erbium doped fiber amplifier.

8. A method according to claim 6 , wherein said fault condition is an out-of-frame (OOF) fault condition.

9. A method according to claim 6 , said method further comprising enabling said amplifier when said power level increases above said predetermined threshold.
