Abstract

Chemically-bonded retarder stacks are provided in this disclosure. A first organic layer having a first molecular orientation is chemically welded to a second organic layer having a second molecular orientation. The first and second molecular orientations are crossed when the organic layers are laminated. The first and second organic layers may be polycarbonate films, which can be welded together using a suitable solvent.

Claims (27)

1 . A laminated retarder stack comprising

a first organic layer, the molecules of the first organic layer substantially having a first orientation; and

a second organic layer chemically bonded to the first organic layer, the molecules of the second organic layer substantially having a second orientation;

wherein the first and second orientations of the chemically bonded first and second organic layers are crossed.

2 . A laminated retarder stack according to claim 1 , wherein the chemically bonded interface between the first and second organic layer forms an interface that eliminates the surface reflection.

3 . A laminated retarder stack according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second organic layers comprise the same material.

4 . A laminated retarder stack according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second organic layers comprise polycarbonate.

5 . A laminated retarder stack according to claim 1 , wherein the first organic layer is a biaxially stretched film.

6 . A laminated retarder stack according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second organic layers are uniaxially stretched films.

7 . A laminated retarder stack according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second organic layers are bonded in a crossed-stack arrangement.

8 . A laminated retarder stack according to claim 1 , further comprising additional molecularly oriented organic layers that are chemically bonded to at least one of the first and second organic layers.

9 . A laminated retarder stack according to claim 8 , wherein one or more of the additional organic layers comprises the same material as at least one of the first and second organic layers.

10 . A laminated retarder stack according to claim 8 , wherein the first and second organic layers and the at least one of the one or more additional organic layers comprise polycarbonate.

11 . A laminated retarder stack according to claim 1 , wherein the first organic layer is a polymer.

12 . A laminated retarder stack according to claim 11 , wherein the polymer is selected from the group consisting of polycarbonate, poly-vinyl alcohol, polysulphone, polyacrylate, mylar, polyamide, polypropylene, polyethylene teraphalate, triacetate, polytetrafluoroethylene, and polymethylmethacrylate.

13 . A laminated retarder stack according to claim 12 , wherein the first organic layer comprises polycarbonate.

14 . A laminated retarder stack according to claim 1 , wherein the retarder stack is operable to generate an achromatic white state or black state.

15 . A method for laminating organic films into a retarder stack, the method comprising:

providing a first organic layer, the molecules of the first organic layer substantially having a first orientation;

providing a second organic layer, the molecules of the second organic layer substantially having a second orientation; and

bonding the first organic layer to the second organic layer with a chemical solvent;

wherein the first and second orientations of the bonded first and second organic layers are crossed when the first and second organic layers are bonded together.

16 . A method according to claim 15 , further comprising bonding one or more additional molecularly oriented organic layers to the retarder stack with the chemical solvent.

17 . A method according to claim 15 , wherein the solvent is methylene chloride.

18 . A method according to claim 15 , wherein the first organic layer comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of polycarbonate, poly-vinyl alcohol, polysulphone, polyacrylate, mylar, polyamide, polypropylene, polyethylene teraphalate, triacetate, polytetrafluoroethylene, and polymethylmethacrylate.

19 . A method according to claim 18 , wherein the first organic layer comprises polycarbonate.

20 . A method according to claim 19 , wherein the solvent is methylene chloride.
