Abstract

A method, system, apparatus, and computer readable medium storing instructions for recording data tracks and a method and system for reading data tracks. For recording data tracks, virtual boundary of a first data track recorded on the storage medium is determined. The recording element is positioned based on the determined virtual boundary of the first track and a second data track is recorded by the positioned recording element. For reading data tracks, a first virtual boundary of a first data track and a second virtual boundary of the first data track are determined and a reading element is positioned at a center of the first data track based on the determined virtual boundaries. In the system of reading recorded data tracks, a number of forward reading elements and backward reading elements are provided. The forward reading elements have different pitches.

wherein the virtual margin comprises a distance from a starting position in which each of a plurality of reading elements of the tape drive reads a respective data track to a last position in which each of the plurality of reading elements reads the respective data track.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the determined boundary of the first data track is a virtual boundary.

3. The method according to claim 2 , further comprising:

determining a virtual track width of the first data track based on the determined virtual boundary; wherein the second data track overlaps the first data track such that an amount of the overlap is based on the determined virtual track width.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the virtual track width of the data tracks changes as a result of environmental conditions.

5. The method according to claim 2 , further comprising analyzing a plurality of recording signals from a plurality of recording elements and determining the virtual data track boundaries.

6. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the first data track has a predetermined width that is at least as wide as a virtual read element.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the virtual read element specifies a minimum width such that physical data tracks of a logical track are readable, where each of the physical data tracks corresponds to a respective read or write element.

8. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the second data track partially overwrites the first data track to define the virtual track.

9. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the storage medium is a magnetic tape.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the virtual track defines an area in which each of the plurality of reading elements reads a respective track.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the predetermined virtual read element defines a minimum readable width of the virtual track.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein an amount of the overlapping between the first and second data tracks is equal to or less than the determined virtual margin.

13. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the predetermined virtual read element is predefined during calibration.

14. A head positioning system comprising:

at least one head, each having at least one read element and at least one recording element; and

a controller determining a boundary of the edge of a first data track recorded on the storage medium, controlling a position of a recording element based on a determined virtual boundary of the first track; and controlling the recording element to record a second data track on the storage medium by the positioned recording element;

wherein the boundary of the edge of the first data track is the virtual boundary;

wherein the controller determines a virtual track width of the first data track based on the determined virtual boundary and controls the recording of the second data track such that the second data track partially overlaps the first data track and wherein an amount of said overlap is based on the determined virtual track width; and

wherein the controller determines the virtual track width as follows:

the controller determines first and second virtual boundaries of the first data track;

the controller determines a virtual margin from the determined boundaries; and the controller calculates the virtual track width from the determined virtual margin and a predetermined virtual read element,

wherein a virtual track corresponds to a logical track comprising a physical track for each of a plurality of recording elements of a tape drive that records the data tracks on the storage medium, and

wherein the virtual margin comprises a distance from a starting position in which each of a plurality of reading elements of the tape drive reads a respective data track to a last position in which each of the plurality of reading elements reads the respective data track.

15. The system according to claim 14 , wherein the virtual track defines an area in which each of the plurality of reading elements read a respective track.

16. The system according to claim 15 , wherein the predetermined virtual read element defines a minimum width of the virtual track.

17. The system according to claim 14 , wherein the predetermined virtual read element is predefined during calibration.

18. The system according to claim 14 , wherein the virtual track width of the data tracks is corrected to a predetermined value in a presence of environmental conditions.

19. The system according to claim 14 , wherein the controller analyzes a plurality of recording signals from a plurality of recording elements and determines the virtual data track boundaries.

20. The system according to claim 14 , wherein the storage medium is a magnetic tape.
