Abstract

Medical devices, and in particular implantable medical devices, may be coated to minimize or substantially eliminate a biological organism's reaction to the introduction of the medical device to the organism. The medical devices may be coated with any number of biocompatible materials. Therapeutic drugs, agents or compounds may be mixed with the biocompatible materials and affixed to at least a portion of the medical device. These therapeutic agents or compounds may also further reduce a biological organism's reaction to the introduction of the medical device to the organism. In addition, these therapeutic drugs, agents and/or compounds may be utilized to promote healing, including the prevention of thrombosis. The drugs, agents, and/or compounds may also be utilized to treat specific disorders, including vulnerable plaque, and atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetic patients. Therapeutic agents may also be delivered to the region of a disease site. In regional delivery, liquid formulations may be desirable to increase the efficacy and deliverability of the particular drug. Various materials and coating methodologies may be utilized to maintain the agents or compounds on the medical device until delivered and positioned.

Claims (7)

1. An implantable medical device consisting of:

a metallic structure configured for implantation in an organ of the body;

a solution of a first stereospecific and optically pure biodegradable polymer affixed to at least a portion of the metallic structure, and

a solution of a second stereospecific and optically pure biodegradable polymer having an opposite optical rotation from that of the first stereospecific and optically pure biodegradable polymer, the solution of the second stereospecific and optically pure biodegradable polymer being affixed to the solution of the first stereospecific and optically pure biodegradable polymer, wherein the first and second solutions of stereospecific and optically pure biodegradable polymers are layered in a solution form on top of one another in an alternating fashion and bind in situ to form at least one stereo polymer complex layer that is substantially crystalline, wherein the stereo polymer complex layer consists of a pair of substantially even, alternate discrete layers of the first and second stereospecific and optically pure biodegradable polymers and wherein at least one therapeutic agent is interspersed beneath the at least one stereo polymer complex layer.

2. The implantable medical device according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second stereospecific and optically pure biodegradable polymers are configured as a layer-by-layer complex and deposited in reservoirs in the structure.

3. The implantable medical device according to claim 1 , wherein the structure is a stent.

4. The implantable medical device according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second stereospecific and optically pure biodegradable polymers each are one of poly (D-lactic acid) and poly (L-lactic acid).
