Abstract

A transmission having a plurality of tilting balls and opposing input and output discs provides an infinite number of speed combinations over its transmission ratio range. The transmission provides multiple powerpaths and can be combined with electrical components to provide motor/generator functionality, which reduces the overall size and complexity of the motor and transmission compared to when they are constructed separately. In one embodiment, rotatable components of a continuously variable transmission are coupled separately to an electrical rotor and to an electrical stator so that the rotor and stator rotate simultaneously in opposite directions relative to one another. In other embodiments, an electrical rotor is configured to transfer torque to or from a disc that is in contact with a plurality of speed adjusters, while an electrical stator is configured to transfer torque to a shaft that is operationally coupled to the speed adjusters via an idler.

Claims (33)

1. An electromechanical transmission comprising:

a plurality of speed adjusters arranged angularly about an axis;

an idler in contact with the plurality of speed adjusters and positioned radially inward of the speed adjusters;

a first disc in contact with the speed adjusters;

a plurality of magnets coupled to the first disc;

means for transferring torque to the first disc from an external source;

a rotatable cage configured to support the speed adjusters radially and axially; and

a plurality of electrical conductors coupled to the rotatable cage.

2. The electromechanical transmission of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of speed adjusters comprises a plurality of spherical adjusters.

3. The electromechanical transmission of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of magnets comprises a plurality of electromagnets.

4. The electromechanical transmission of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of magnets and the plurality of electrical conductors are arranged to produce electricity or mechanical torque.

5. The electromechanical transmission of claim 4 , further comprising an idler shaft rigidly coupled to the idler.

6. The electromechanical transmission of claim 5 , wherein the idler shaft is configured to translate axially.

7. The electromechanical transmission of claim 6 , wherein an axial translation of the idler shaft facilitates a tilt of the speed adjusters relative to said axis.

8. The electromechanical transmission of claim 7 , further comprising a second disc in contact with the speed adjusters, wherein the first and second discs are positioned relative to one another on opposite sides of the speed adjusters.

9. The electromechanical transmission of claim 4 , further comprising a hybrid case coupled to the first disc.

10. The electromechanical transmission of claim 9 , wherein the hybrid case is configured to receive power input.

11. The electromechanical transmission of claim 5 , further comprising a plurality of magnets coupled to the idler shaft.

12. The electromechanical transmission of claim 1 , wherein power is delivered to the second disc via the speed adjusters, the first disc and the torque transfer means.

13. An electromechanical transmission comprising:

a plurality of speed adjusters arranged angularly about an axis;

an idler in contact with the plurality of speed adjusters and positioned radially inward of the speed adjusters;

a first disc in contact with the speed adjusters;

a plurality of magnets coupled to the first disc;

a rotatable cage configured to support the speed adjusters radially and axially;

a plurality of electrical conductors coupled to the rotatable cage; and

a second disc in contact with the speed adjusters, wherein the first and second discs are positioned relative to one another on opposite sides of the speed adjusters.

14. The electromechanical transmission of claim 13 , wherein power is delivered to the second disc via the speed adjusters, the first disc, and the plurality of magnets.

15. The electromechanical transmission of claim 14 , wherein power is delivered to the second disc via the speed adjusters, the rotatable cage, and the plurality of electrical conductors.

16. The electromechanical transmission of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of magnets comprises an electrical rotor.

17. The electromechanical transmission of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of electrical conductors comprises an electrical stator.

18. The electromechanical transmission of claim 17 , wherein the electrical rotor is configured to deliver torque to the first disc, and wherein the electrical stator is configured to deliver torque to the cage.

19. The electromechanical transmission of claim 17 , wherein the electrical rotor is configured to receive torque from the first disc, and wherein the electrical stator is configured to receive torque from the cage.
