Novel Polymer Films and Textile Laminates Containing Such Polymer Films
Polymer film having at least two regions of differing translucency. The at least two regions of differing translucency can be obtained by selectively compressing regions of the polymer film. Laminate comprising textile material and such a polymer film. The laminates can be breathable and/or waterproof. Suitable uses for the laminate include, for example, garments, tents, and sleeping bags.
1 . A method for selectively compressing a polymer film/textile laminate comprising:
providing a first patterned roll having high and low portions;
providing a second patterned roll having high and low portions;
arranging the first patterned roll and the second patterned roll to form a nip therebetween and the high portions of the first and second patterned roll and the low portions of the first patterned roll and the second patterned roll mate when the rolls are rotated; and
passing the polymer film/textile laminate through the nip to selectively compress the polymer film/textile laminate.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymer film comprises at least some interconnected porosity.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymer film comprises a material selected from the group consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene, polyester, polyurethane, and polyolefin.
4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the polytetrafluoroethylene comprises expanded polytetraflouroethylene.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the polymer film/textile laminate further comprises polyurethane applied to at least one side of the expanded polytetrafluoroethylene film.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymer film/textile laminate is waterproof.
7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the polymer film/textile laminate is breathable.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the polymer film has a first side adhered to a first layer of textile material and a second side adhered to a second layer of textile material.
9 . A garment formed by the method of claim 1 .
10 . The garment of claim 9 , wherein the garment is selected from the group consisting of shirts, pants, gloves, shoes, hats, and jackets.
11 . A sleeping bag formed by the method of claim 1 .
12 . A tent formed by the method of claim 1 .
13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first patterned roll and the second patterned roll are heated to a temperature of between about 300 F and about 400 F while passing the polymer film/textile laminate therebetween.
14 . A method for selectively compressing a ePTFE film/textile laminate comprising:
providing a first patterned roll having high and low portions;
providing a second patterned roll having high and low portions;
arranging the first patterned roll and the second patterned roll to form a nip therebetween and the high portions of the first and second patterned roll and the low portions of the first patterned roll and the second patterned roll mate when the rolls are rotated; and
passing the ePTFE film/textile laminate through the nip to selectively compress the ePTFE film/textile laminate.
15 . A garment formed by the method of claim 14 .
16 . The garment of claim 15 , wherein the garment is selected from the group consisting of shirts, pants, gloves, shoes, hats, and jackets.
17 . A sleeping bag formed by the method of claim 14 .
18 . A tent formed by the method of claim 14 .
19 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the first patterned roll and the second patterned roll are heated to a temperature of between about 300 F and about 400 F while passing the polymer film/textile laminate therebetween.
