Abstract

The disclosures made herein relate to an infusion device specifically adapted for syringe injections. In one embodiment of the disclosures made herein, an infusion device comprises a body including an accessible surface having a single inlet port therein, an engagement surface having a single outlet port therein, a medication delivery channel extending between the single inlet port and the single outlet port, and an identification feature on the accessible surface of the body adjacent to the single inlet port. The single inlet port of the medication delivery channel is tapered thereby forming a funnel-shaped entry into the medication delivery channel. A cannula is coupled to the body at the single outlet port and is adapted for receiving medication from the single outlet port and transmitting the medication therethrough.

Claims (38)

1. An infusion device comprising:

a body having a body passageway, a top, a bottom surface, an accessible surface that generally gets broader from the top to the bottom surface, and a greatest outer perimeter;

a cannula having a portion extending from the body and being positioned such that any portion of the cannula that is above a patient's skin when the infusion device is used does not extend beyond the greatest outer perimeter of the body, the cannula having an inner surface that defines a cannula passageway, the inner surface including (a) a first portion that cannot be in direct contact with medication delivered to a patient when the infusion device is used and (b) a second portion that can be in direct contact with medication delivered to a patient when the infusion device is used;

self-sealing material coupled to the body, the self-sealing material comprising a septum;

an adhesive laminate member attached to the body and not in contact with the self-sealing material; and

an insertion needle extending through the septum and the cannula passageway;

where the cannula includes a top edge that is closer to the self-sealing material than is the adhesive laminate member.

2. The infusion device of claim 1 , in which the septum has a top surface and includes an outer wall extending from the top surface that includes an inwardly-tapered portion.

The infusion device of claim 1 , in which an axis is centered in and runs through the body passageway, the septum includes a top surface and a bottom, and the infusion device includes (a) a first greatest distance parallel to the axis between the septum top surface and the top of the body and (b) a second greatest distance parallel to the axis between the bottom of the septum and the bottom surface of the body, the second greatest distance being greater than the first greatest distance.

4. The infusion device of claim 1 , in which the body includes an inlet to the body passageway and an identification feature adjacent to the inlet for identifying the body passageway.

5. An infusion device comprising:

a body having a body passageway, a top, a bottom surface, an accessible surface that generally gets broader from the top to the bottom surface, and a greatest outer perimeter;

a cannula having a portion extending from the body and being positioned such that any portion of the cannula that is above a patient's skin when the infusion device is used does not extend beyond the greatest outer perimeter of the body, the cannula having an inner surface that defines a cannula passageway, the inner surface including (a) a first portion that cannot be in direct contact with medication delivered to a patient when the infusion device is used and (b) a second portion that can be in direct contact with medication delivered to a patient when the infusion device is used;

self-sealing material coupled to the body, the self-sealing material comprising a septum, the self-sealing material having an outer perimeter that is smaller than the outer perimeter of the body;

an adhesive laminate member attached to the body; and

an insertion needle extending through the septum and the cannula passageway;

where the cannula includes a top edge that is closer to the self-sealing material than is the adhesive laminate member.

6. The infusion device of claim 5 , in which the septum has a top surface and includes an outer wall extending from the top surface that includes an inwardly-tapered portion.

The infusion device of claim 5 , in which an axis is centered in and runs through the body passageway, the septum includes a top surface and a bottom, and the infusion device includes (a) a first greatest distance parallel to the axis between the septum top surface and the top of the body and (b) a second greatest distance parallel to the axis between the bottom of the septum and the bottom surface of the body, the second greatest distance being greater than the first greatest distance.

8. The infusion device of claim 5 , in which the body includes an inlet to the body passageway and an identification feature adjacent to the inlet for identifying the body passageway.

9. An infusion device comprising:

a body having a body passageway, a top, a bottom surface, an accessible surface that generally gets broader from the top to the bottom surface, and a greatest outer perimeter,

a cannula having a portion extending from the body and being positioned such that any portion of the cannula that is above a patient's skin when the infusion device is used does not extend beyond the greatest outer perimeter of the body, the cannula having an inner surface that defines a cannula passageway, the inner surface including (a) a first portion that cannot be in direct contact with medication delivered to a patient when the infusion device is used and (b) a second portion that can be in direct contact with medication delivered to a patient when the infusion device is used;

self-sealing material coupled to the body, the self-sealing material comprising a septum; and

an adhesive laminate member attached to the body and not in contact with the self-sealing material;

where the cannula includes a top edge that is closer to the self-scaling material than is the adhesive laminate member.

10. The infusion device of claim 9 , in which the septum has a top surface and includes an outer wall extending from the top surface that includes an inwardly-tapered portion.

11. The infusion device of claim 9 , in which an axis is centered in and runs through the body passageway, the septum includes a top surface and a bottom, and the infusion device includes (a) a first greatest distance parallel to the axis between the septum top surface and the top of the body and (b) a second greatest distance parallel to the axis between the bottom of the septum and the bottom surface of the body, the second greatest distance being greater than the first greatest distance.

12. The infusion device of claim 9 , in which the body includes an inlet to the body passageway and an identification feature adjacent to the inlet for identifying the body passageway.

13. An infusion device comprising:

a body having a body passageway, a top, a bottom surface, an accessible surface that generally gets broader from the top to the bottom surface, and a greatest outer perimeter;

a cannula having a portion extending from the body and being positioned such that any portion of the cannula that is above a patient's skin when the infusion device is used does not extend beyond the greatest outer perimeter of the body, the cannula having an inner surface that defines a cannula passageway, the inner surface including (a) a first portion that cannot be in direct contact with medication delivered to a patient when the infusion device is used and (b) a second portion that can be in direct contact with medication delivered to a patient when the infusion device is used;

self-sealing material coupled to the body, the self-sealing material comprising a septum, the self-sealing material having an outer perimeter that is smaller than the outer perimeter of the body; and

an adhesive laminate member attached to the body;

where the cannula includes a top edge that is closer to the self-sealing material than is the adhesive laminate member.

14. The infusion device of claim 13 , in which the septum has a top surface and includes an outer wall extending from the top surface that includes an inwardly-tapered portion.

15. The infusion device of claim 13 , in which an axis is centered in and runs through the body passageway, the septum includes a top surface and a bottom, and the infusion device includes (a) a first greatest distance parallel to the axis between the septum top surface and the top of the body and (b) a second greatest distance parallel to the axis between the bottom of the septum and the bottom surface of the body, the second greatest distance being greater than the first greatest distance.

16. The infusion device of claim 13 , in which the body includes an inlet to the body passageway and an identification feature adjacent to the inlet for identifying the body passageway.
