Abstract

An approach for adaptively providing network performance enhancing functions in a secure environment, such as a virtual private network, is disclosed. Traffic, for example, Internet Protocol (IP) packets, is received for transport over an access network (e.g., satellite network). Next, characteristics (e.g., latency) of the access network are determined. A connection (which supports the performance enhancing functions) is selectively established based on the determined characteristics for transport the received packets over the access network. An encrypted tunnel is provided over the established connection to transmit the received packets.

Claims (37)

1. A method of communicating, the method comprising:

receiving a plurality of packets from a host for transport over a network that includes a satellite network;

determining characteristics of the network;

filtering the plurality of packets by a firewall integrated with a performance enhancing proxy module, according to a security policy, wherein the performance enhancing proxy module is configured to establish a connection over the network and to adaptively apply a performance enhancing proxying function to the filtered packets to improve performance of the network according to the determined characteristics of the network; and

selectively triggering establishment of a virtual private network (VPN) tunnel over the established connection based on status information about the VPN tunnel, wherein the filtered packets, after application of the performance enhancing proxying function, are encrypted through the tunnel.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the host in the receiving step transmits the plurality of packets according to Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) over one or more TCP connections.

3. A method according to claim 2 wherein the connection in the filtering step is accelerated by performing the steps of:

spooling acknowledgement messages to the host; and

multiplexing the TCP connections for transport over the established connection.

4. A computer-readable storage medium bearing instructions for providing integrated firewall and network acceleration functions, said instruction, being arranged, upon execution, to cause one or more processors to perform the method of claim 2 .

5. A system comprising:

a network performance enhancing peer having an integrated firewall that is configured to filter a plurality of packets received from a host terminal for transport over a network that includes a satellite network, according to a security policy, wherein the network performance enhancing peer is further configured to establish a connection over the network and to adaptively apply a performance enhancing proxying function to the filtered packets to improve performance of the network according to determined characteristics of the network; and

a tunneling peer configured to selectively trigger establishment of the VPN tunnel over the established connection, wherein the filtered packets, after application of the performance enhancing proxying function, are encrypted through the tunnel.

6. A device according to claim 5 wherein the host terminal transmits the plurality of packets according to Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) over one or more TCP connections.

7. A device according to claim 6 wherein the network performance peer is configured to perform the steps of:

spooling acknowledgement messages to the host terminal; and

multiplexing the TCP connections for transport over the established connection.

8. A method of supporting a Virtual Private Network (VPN), the method comprising:

receiving a request to establish a connection with a network performance peer over a network, wherein the network performance peer includes an integrated firewall that is configured to filter a plurality of packets from a host according to a security policy for transport of the filtered packets over the connection for enhancing performance of the network that includes a satellite network;

establishing the connection in response to the request; and

establishing an encrypted VPN tunnel with a security peer over the established connection, wherein the filtered packets are carried over the VPN tunnel;

determining whether a particular performance enhancing proxying (PEP) connection is being carried over the VPN tunnel;

if the particular PEP connection is being carried over the VPN tunnel, determining status information of the particular PEP connection and determining existence of the VPN tunnel;

receiving a notification from a VPN peer indicating successful establishment of the VPN tunnel; and

establishing the particular PEP connection based on the status information for transport of the filtered packets over the VPN tunnel.

9. A method according to claim 8 wherein the network performance peer is configured to perform the steps of:

spoofing acknowledgement messages to the host that generates the plurality of packets for transport over the VPN tunnel; and

multiplexing flows of the packets from the host for transport over the established connection within the VPN tunnel.

10. A method according to claim 1 wherein the determined characteristics include latency of the network.

11. A method according to claim 1 further comprising:

receiving an explicit notification relating to flow control of the connection; and

providing the flow control specified by the received explicit notification.

12. A method according to claim 1 wherein the determined characteristics include one of round trip time of the network, throughput of the network, and available bandwidth of the network.

13. A method according to claim 12 the method further comprising:

supporting congestion control of the packets based upon the determined throughput, wherein the congestion control is initiated by a receiver of the packets.

14. A method according to claim 1 the method further comprising:

receiving an indicator of quality of service associated with the network, the indicator specifying one of the characteristics.
