Abstract

The invention provides for a driven mechanism for a cradle unit which operatively receives a cartridge to form an inkjet printer. The driven mechanism includes a motor with a transmission assembly. A rotor element drive assembly is mechanically coupled to the transmission assembly for operating a rotor element of the cartridge. A print media transport assembly is mechanically coupled to the transmission assembly and configured to transport print media across a printhead integrated circuit of the print cartridge during printing. An air compressor is mechanically coupled to the transmission assembly for providing compressed air to keep the printhead integrated circuit clear of debris.

Claims (11)

1. A driven mechanism for a cradle unit which operatively receives a cartridge to form an inkjet printer, the driven mechanism comprising:

a motor with a transmission assembly

a rotor element drive assembly mechanically coupled to the transmission assembly for operating a rotor element of the cartridge;

a print media transport assembly mechanically coupled to the transmission assembly and configured to transport print media across a printhead integrated circuit of the print cartridge during printing; and

an air compressor mechanically coupled to the transmission assembly for providing compressed air to keep the printhead integrated circuit clear of debris,

wherein the motor is controlled by a controller board of the cradle unit that includes one or more custom Small Office Home Office Printer Engine Chips (SOPEC), and

the rotor element drive assembly includes a rotor element angle sensor configured to detect an orientation of the rotor element, said sensor arranged in signal communication with the SOPEC.

2. The driven mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the transmission assembly includes a direct drive coupling from a spindle of the motor to an impeller of the air compressor and a worm-gear and cog transmission to the rotor element and print media transport assembly.

3. The driven mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the compressor includes a fan housing, air filter and impeller, the fan housing having an air outlet that is adapted to mate with an air inlet port of the cartridge.

4. The driven mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the rotor element has a reflective surface that is arranged to reflect rays from a light source so that the orientation of the rotor element is detectable by the angle sensor.

5. The driven mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the print media transport assembly includes a paper sensor configured to detect the presence of print media, said sensor arranged in signal communication with the SOPEC.
