Abstract

Tools and methods are provided for removing biological units from a body surface utilizing a removal tool. The tools may incorporate retention members and mechanisms configured to impede movement of the biological unit in the direction of a distal end of the tool and to improve retention of the biological unit in the tool. Some of the retention members are stationary and some are movable within the lumen of the biological unit removal tools. The distal tips of the tools are desirably configured to reduce the chance of transection of a biological unit, such as by including both cutting segments and blunt relief segments. A number of dual concentric tube embodiments permit a division of removal functions. Distal fluid or gas delivery may supplement a vacuum in a luminal space to help extract biological units from surrounding tissue.

Claims (28)

1. A method of removing biological tissue from a donor area, comprising:

rapidly advancing an inner elongated body to penetrate the donor area, the inner elongated body having a lumen sized to receive a biological unit and a distal tip adapted to cut through tissue;

halting the advance of the inner elongated body at a first depth;

advancing an outer elongated body more slowly than the rapid advancement of the inner elongated body and concentrically over the inner elongated body so that a distal tip of the outer elongated body extends past the first depth to a second depth, the distal tip of the outer elongated body being relatively duller than the distal tip of the inner elongated body; and

withdrawing the inner and outer elongated bodies to remove the biological unit from the donor area.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the inner and the outer elongated bodies are simultaneously withdrawn.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein withdrawal of the inner elongated body is initiated after the withdrawal of the outer elongated body is initiated,

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is robotic comprising the use of a robotic system.

5. The method of claim 1 , comprising advancing the outer elongated body into the donor area through an incision created by the distal tip of the inner elongated body.

6. The method of claim 1 , comprising rotating the outer elongated body while it is advanced into the donor area.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein rotation of the outer elongated body is slightly off the axis of the inner elongated body.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the distal tip of the outer elongated body defines a relatively circular periphery and a lip projecting distally therefrom, the method comprising rotating the outer elongated body while it is advanced into the donor area so that the lip enters into and guides the rest of the periphery of the distal tip of the outer elongated body into a circular incision in the donor area created by the inner elongated body.

9. The method of claim 1 , further including supplying a fluid or gas under pressure to the distal tip of the outer elongated body.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein fluid or gas is delivered through one or more longitudinally extending channels each opening at a port located close to the distal tip of the outer elongated body.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising severing the biological unit from surrounding tissue using supplied fluid or gas under pressure.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is substantially automated.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biological unit is a follicular unit and the method comprises harvesting the follicular unit from a body surface.

14. A method of removing biological tissue from a donor area, comprising:

positioning a removal tool adjacent a donor area, the removal tool including an inner elongated body having a lumen sized to receive a biological unit and a distal tip adapted to cut through tissue, an outer elongated body, and a retention member adapted to contact the biological unit and impede its movement within the tool in a distal direction;

rapidly advancing the inner elongated body to penetrate the donor area;

advancing the outer elongated body more slowly than the rapid advancement of the inner elongated body and concentrically over the inner elongated body so that a distal tip of the outer elongated body extends past the distal tip of the inner elongated body; and

withdrawing the inner and outer elongated bodies to remove the biological unit from the donor area with assistance of the retention member.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the retention member is radially movable, and the method includes radially displacing the retention member from a retracted position to a retention position.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the retention member is a balloon.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the retention member comprises an elastic member positioned around the outer elongated body and having a portion that extends through a window in the outer elongated body.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the retention member is axially movable, and the method includes axially displacing the retention member from a retracted position to a retention position.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the retention member is deformable, and the method includes deforming the retention member to surround the biological unit and constrict its movement in a distal direction.

20. The method of claim 14 , wherein the biological unit is a follicular unit.
