Abstract

Prosthetic devices having vacuum components operative to evacuate the interior of a prosthetic socket thereof, and control systems for use therewith. The evacuation devices preferably include at least an electrically powered vacuum pump and associated power source, and a vacuum accumulator connected to the vacuum pump. Associated control systems may be of various designs and may employ wired or wireless communication. Control of an evacuation device may be based on vacuum level, residual limb volume, residual limb motion, user activity level or other device parameters.

Claims (24)

1. A prosthetic device, comprising

a prosthetic socket having an interior volume adapted to receive a residual limb and an exterior surface that serves in part as a mounting surface for an evacuation device housing;

a vacuum passageway through the prosthetic socket;

an evacuation device comprising an electrically powered vacuum pump and a power source both located within an evacuation device housing, said evacuation device housing attached to an evacuation device mounting surface of said socket such that said vacuum pump is in communication with said vacuum passageway; and

a vacuum accumulator in communication with said vacuum pump and said vacuum passageway, said vacuum accumulator located external to said prosthetic socket.

2. The prosthetic device of claim 1 , wherein said vacuum accumulator resides between the exterior of said distal end of said prosthetic socket and another prosthetic component.

3. The prosthetic device of claim 2 , wherein said prosthetic component is a pylon.

4. The prosthetic device of claim 2 , wherein said vacuum accumulator is an independent vessel that resides within said evacuation device housing of said evacuation device.

5. The prosthetic device of claim 2 , wherein said vacuum accumulator is comprised of all or a portion of the interior of said evacuation device housing of said evacuation device.

6. The prosthetic device of claim 2 , wherein said vacuum accumulator is an independent vessel that resides between said evacuation device and said exterior distal end of said prosthetic socket, and is in fluid communication with both.

7. The prosthetic device of claim 2 , further comprising a distal adapter designed for integration into said distal end of said prosthetic socket, said distal adapter further designed for attachment to said evacuation device housing of said evacuation device.

8. The prosthetic device of claim 1 , wherein said power source is rechargeable.

9. The prosthetic device of claim 8 , wherein said evacuation device is operable while said power source is being recharged.

10. A prosthetic socket evacuation device useable with a single-wall prosthetic socket having an open proximal end, a closed or substantially closed distal end having a vacuum passage passing through said single wall, an interior volume that is adapted to receive a residual limb and is defined by an inner surface of said single wall, said inner surface of said single wall forming a residual limb contacting surface and an exterior surface of said single wall serving at least in part as a mounting surface for an evacuation device housing, said device comprising:

a distal adapter having a size and shape for fitment within an interior space at the distal end of said prosthetic socket, said distal adapter having a to face for abutting a distal end of a residual limb and a bottom face for abutting said inner surface of said single wall of said prosthetic socket;

a vacuum passage in said distal adapter, said vacuum passage located to be aligned with said vacuum passage passing through said single wall of said prosthetic socket when said distal adapter resides therein so as to allow communication with an interior of said prosthetic socket through the distal adapter;

an evacuation device comprising at least an electrically powered vacuum pump contained within a housing, said housing configured for attachment to said bottom surface of said distal adapter with said single wall of said prosthetic socket trapped therebetween;

a vacuum passage in said housing of said evacuation device, said vacuum passage in said housing located to be aligned with said vacuum passage in said distal adapter and said vacuum passage through said single wall of said prosthetic socket when said evacuation device is properly attached to said distal adapter,

a power source in communication with said vacuum pump; and

a vacuum accumulator in communication with said vacuum pump, said vacuum accumulator located external to said prosthetic socket;

wherein, when said evacuation device and said distal adapter are installed to said prosthetic socket, said vacuum pump will be in communication with said vacuum passage in said distal adapter through said vacuum passage in said evacuation device housing and said vacuum passage through said single wall of said prosthetic socket, and will also be in communication with said vacuum accumulator.

11. The prosthetic device of claim 10 , wherein said vacuum accumulator is an independent vessel that resides within said housing of said evacuation device.

12. The prosthetic device of claim 10 , wherein said vacuum accumulator is comprised of all or a portion of the interior of said housing of said evacuation device.

The prosthetic device of claim 10 , wherein said vacuum accumulator is an independent vessel that is adapted to mount between said evacuation device and said distal adapter, said vacuum accumulator including a housing having a vacuum passage that is aligned with said vacuum passage in said distal adapter and said vacuum passage in said evacuation device housing when said vacuum accumulator is properly located therebetween.
