Abstract

Disclosed is a system for reducing microbial levels on a hide of an animal utilizing a device for contacting the hide of an animal with an alkaline solution having a pH of between about 8 and about 13 after stunning the animal, a second a device for contacting the hide with a second solution that includes one of water, organic acid or hydrogen peroxide and a device for reusing at least a portion of the alkaline solution or the water/organic acid/hydrogen peroxide.

Claims (46)

1. A system for reducing microbial levels on a hide of a bovine animal, comprising:

a first station for stunning the bovine animal;

a second station for exsanguinating the animal;

a third station for applying at least one anti-microbial agent to a hide of the animal, said third station facilitating at least partially removing at least a portion of the hide from the animal and a means for conveying said animal through at least said third station, said third station comprising:

first means for contacting an animal that has a quantity of microorganisms on its hair with a first solution having antimicrobial properties, said first solution comprising sodium hydroxide, said means including a plurality of nozzles that generate a pressurized spray comprising said first solution;

second means for contacting said animal with a second solution, said second solution comprising at least one of water, an organic acid, and hydrogen peroxide, after said first solution has dwelled on the animal's hair for at least 180 seconds; and

third means for contacting the animal with a solution comprising one or more of a surfactant and a wetting agent selected from the group consisting of soap, an alcohol, a fatty acid, and a detergent; wherein at least one of said first, second and third means for contacting comprise a plurality of spray nozzles,

a means for removing at least some hair from the hide of the animal;

a means for heating at least one of said first solution and said second solution to a temperature of at least about 90 degrees Fahrenheit;

a means for reusing at least a portion of the first solution or said second solution, said means for reusing operatively associated with one of said first and second means for contacting said means for reusing further comprising a means for collecting a waste stream comprising a pre-wetting substance, a depilatory substance and removed hair, and a means for processing said waste streams by a system comprising at least one of:

a means for separating solid waste from liquid waste;

a means for treating the solid waste to separate hair from other solids;

a means for recovering protein from the removed hair; and

a means for treating the liquid waste to produce a result selected from the group consisting of:

removal and recycling of sulfides;

removal of fine solid waste from the liquid;

recovering and recycling water from the liquid waste;

eliminating H2S gas from the liquid waste; and

disposal of residual sulfides in the liquid waste as sulfates.

2. The system as set forth in claim 1 , further comprising a means for filtering at least one of said first solution or second solution, said means including one or more of a filter, a screen, and a centrifuge.

3. The system as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said plurality of nozzles is arranged around the hide of said animal in a configuration such that all surfaces of the hide are contacted with a spray emanating from said nozzles.

4. The system as set forth in claim 1 , wherein at least one of said first means for contacting, said second means for contacting and said third means for contacting the animal, deliver an alkaline solution having a pH of between about 8 and about 13.

5. The system as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said removing means includes a mechanical device selected from the group consisting of blades, combs, and brushes.

6. A system for reducing microbial levels on a hide of a bovine animal, comprising:

a first station for stunning the bovine animal;

a second station for exsanguinating the animal;

a third station for applying at least one anti-microbial agent to a hide of the animal, said third station facilitating at least partially removing at least a portion of the hide from the animal and a means for conveying said animal through at least said third station, said third station comprising:

first means for contacting an animal that has a quantity of microorganisms on its hair with a first solution having antimicrobial properties, said first solution comprising an alkaline solution having a pH of between about 8 and about 13, said means including a plurality of nozzles that generate a pressurized spray comprising said first solution;

second means for contacting said animal with a second solution, said second solution comprising at least one of water, an organic acid, and hydrogen peroxide, after said first solution has dwelled on the animal's hair for at least 180 seconds; and

third means for contacting the animal with a solution comprising one or more of a surfactant and a wetting agent selected from the group consisting of soap, an alcohol, a fatty acid, and a detergent; wherein at least one of said first, second and third means for contacting comprise a plurality of spray nozzles,

a means for removing at least some hair from the hide of the animal;

a means for heating at least one of said first solution and said second solution to a temperature of at least about 90 degrees Fahrenheit;

a means for reusing at least a portion of the first solution or said second solution, said means for reusing operatively associated with one of said first and second-means for contacting said means for reusing further comprising a means for collecting a waste stream comprising a pre-wetting substance, a depilatory substance and removed hair, and a means for processing said waste streams by a system comprising at least one of:

a means for separating solid waste from liquid waste;

a means for treating the solid waste to separate hair from other solids;

a means for recovering protein from the removed hair; and

a means for treating the liquid waste to produce a result selected from the group consisting of:

removal and recycling of sulfides;

removal of fine solid waste from the liquid;

recovering and recycling water from the liquid waste;

eliminating H2S gas from the liquid waste; and

disposal of residual sulfides in the liquid wastes as sulfates.

7. The system as set forth in claim 6 , further comprising a means for filtering at least one of said first solution or second solution, said means including one or more of a filter, a screen, and a centrifuge.

8. The system as set forth in claim 6 , wherein said plurality of nozzles is arranged around the hide of said animal in a configuration such that all surfaces of the hide are contacted with a spray emanating from said nozzles.

9. The system as set forth in claim 6 , wherein at least one of said first means for contacting, said second means for contacting and said third means for contacting the animal, deliver sodium hydroxide.

10. The system as set forth in claim 6 , wherein said removing means includes a mechanical device selected from the group consisting of blades, combs, and brushes.
