Abstract

An access network includes a test system controller that provides a test request in Signaling Network Management Protocol (SNMP) messages to an element management system. A network gateway, in conjunction with the element management system, provides test commands to a customer gateway over a Local loop Emulation Service Embedded Operations Channel (LES-EOC). The customer gateway performs a subscriber loop test on derived subscriber lines connected therewith. Results of the subscriber loop test are provided over the LES-EOC to the gateway. The network gateway sends the results to the test system controller through the element management system in SNMP messages.

Claims (33)

1. A system for performing subscriber loop testing in an optical network, comprising:

a test system controller operable to initiate a subscriber loop test;

an element management system configured to receive a test request from the test system controller;

a network gateway configured to supervise the subscriber loop test in conjunction with the element management system; and

a customer gateway configured to perform the subscriber loop test on derived subscriber lines as controlled by the network gateway, the customer gateway configured to provide results for the subscriber loop test to the network gateway for forwarding to the test system controller through the element management system.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the network gateway, the element management system, and the test system controller communicate through Signaling Network Management Protocol (SNMP) messages.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the network gateway provides test commands to the customer gateway over a Local loop Emulation Service Embedded Operations Channel (LES-EOC).

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the network gateway is configured to perform a digital channel test on an optical link between the network gateway and the customer gateway.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the network gateway provides results of the channel test and the subscriber loop test to the element management system using Signaling Network Management Protocol (SNMP) messages.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the customer gateway includes an integrated metallic test head function.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the network gateway is configured to emulate a channel test at the network gateway in response to a service node initiating the channel test.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the network gateway is configured to provide emulation responses for the channel test to the service node.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the results of the subscriber loop test are provided to the test system controller by bypassing a Class 5 switch.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the subscriber loop test identifies whether a defect exists between the network gateway and an access node to the customer gateway or between the access node and the customer gateway.

11. A method for performing subscriber loop testing in an optical network, comprising:

receiving a trigger to initiate a subscriber loop test;

receiving supervisory information from a network gateway to control the subscriber loop test;

performing the subscriber loop test on derived subscriber lines as controlled by the network gateway; and

providing results for the subscriber loop test to 10 the network gateway for forwarding to a test system controller through an element management system.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the supervisory information and the results are communicated through Signaling Network Management Protocol (SNMP) messages.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein test commands are received from the network gateway over a Local loop Emulation Service Embedded Operations Channel (LES-EOC).

14. The system of claim 11 , further comprising:

performing a digital channel test on an optical link of the network gateway.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the network gateway provides results of the channel test and the subscriber loop test to an element management system using Signaling Network Management Protocol (SNMP) messages.

16. The system of claim 11 , further comprising:

providing an integrated metallic test head function.

17. The system of claim 11 , further comprising:

emulating a channel test at the network gateway.

18. The system of claim 17 , further comprising:

providing emulation responses at the network gateway for the channel test.

19. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing the results of the subscriber loop test to a test system controller by bypassing a Class 5 switch.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the subscriber loop test identifies whether a defect exists between the network gateway and an access node to a customer gateway or between the access node and the customer gateway.
