Abstract

A composition for administration to a subject, such as oral administration to a subject, for example, has been provided. Such a composition may comprise at least one magnesium-counter ion compound. A magnesium-counter ion composition described herein may be useful for any of a variety of applications provided herein, such as maintaining, enhancing, and/or improving health, nutrition, and/or another condition of a subject, and/or cognitive, learning, and/or memory function. A magnesium-counter ion composition provided herein may be useful for administration to a subject presenting magnesium deficiency, mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, ALS, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, migraine, anxiety disorder, mood disorder, and/or hypertension. A kit, method, and other associated technology are also provided.

Claims (34)

1 . A method of extending lifespan of a subject comprising administering to said subject an amount of magnesium-containing compound effective to achieve a physiological concentration of magnesium of about 0.75 mM or above, thereby extending the lifespan of said subject, wherein said concentration is measured under a fasting condition.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said concentration of magnesium is measured after fasting for at least about twelve hours.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said physiological concentration is serum concentration, plasma concentration, or cerebrospinal fluid concentration.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said magnesium-containing compound is a magnesium-counter ion compound.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein said counter ion is an organic counter ion.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein said organic counter ion is threonate.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said magnesium-containing compound is a magnesium-supplemented foodstuff.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said concentration is maintained for a period of greater than 1 month.

9 . A method of extending lifespan of a subject comprising administering to a subject an amount of magnesium-containing compound effective to increase a physiological concentration of magnesium by at least about 10% as compared to an initial level of magnesium prior to said administration.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein said increase is measured under a fasting condition.

11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein said physiological concentration is serum concentration, plasma concentration, or cerebrospinal fluid concentration.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein said magnesium-containing compound is a magnesium-counter ion compound.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein said counter ion is an organic counter ion.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein said organic counter ion is threonate.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein said magnesium-containing compound is a magnesium-supplemented foodstuff.

16 . The method of claim 9 , wherein said concentration is maintained for a period of greater than 4 months.

17 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising the step of determining starting physiological magnesium concentration of said subject under a fasting condition.

18 . A method of extending lifespan of a subject comprising administering to a subject an amount of metal-organic counter ion complex effective to increase a physiological concentration of threonate by at least about 10% as compared to an initial level of threonate prior to said administration.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein said metal-organic counter ion complex comprises threonate as a counter-ion.

20 . A method of determining an effective amount of magnesium to produce a physiological effect, comprising the steps of:

a. obtaining a sample from a subject being tested, wherein said sample is taken under a fasting condition;

b. determining a physiological concentration of magnesium from said sample; and

c. providing said subject with a magnesium-containing compound dosing regimen effective to achieve a physiological concentration of magnesium of about 0.75 mM or above.

21 . The method of claim 20 , wherein said concentration of magnesium is measured after fasting for at least about twelve hours.

22 . The method of claim 20 , wherein said physiological concentration is serum concentration, plasma concentration, or cerebrospinal fluid concentration.

23 . The method of claim 20 , wherein said magnesium-containing compound is a magnesium-counter ion compound.

24 . The method of claim 20 , wherein said counter ion is an organic counter ion.

25 . The method of claim 24 , wherein said organic counter ion is threonate.

26 . The method of claim 20 , wherein said magnesium-containing compound is a magnesium-supplemented foodstuff.

27 . The method of claim 20 , further comprising the step of determining a physiological concentration of magnesium after said subject has begun said dosing regimen.

28 . A method of determining an effective amount of magnesium to produce a physiological effect, comprising the steps of:

a. obtaining a sample from a subject being tested, wherein said sample is taken under a fasting condition;

b. determining a physiological concentration of magnesium from said sample; and

c. providing said subject with a magnesium-containing compound dosing regimen effective to achieve an increase in a physiological concentration of magnesium by at least about 10% as compared to an initial level of magnesium measured under a fasting condition.
