Abstract

A compact integrated waveguide load has a load section disposed within an interior region of the waveguide proximate to a closed end of the waveguide. The load section has a tubiform shape, with an exterior surface congruent with an interior surface of the waveguide and an interior surface defining a circumferential step within the waveguide. A method of making a compact integrated waveguide load includes providing a waveguide and placing electromagnetic wave absorbing materially circumferentially around the interior surface to create an inward step.

Claims (32)

1. A compact waveguide integrated load comprising:

a longitudinal waveguide comprising a closed end, an open end, and an interior waveguide surface enclosing an interior region;

a load section disposed within the interior region proximate to the closed end and extending over a length of the waveguide, the load section comprising electromagnetic absorbing material protruding inward from the interior waveguide surface from all sides of the waveguide partially into the interior region to define a circumferential step within the waveguide.

2. The waveguide integrated load of claim 1 , wherein the load section has a substantially constant first thickness in an E-field direction and a substantially constant second thickness in an H-field direction, the first thickness being different than the second thickness.

3. The waveguide integrated load of claim 1 , wherein the load section has a rectangular cross section.

4. The waveguide integrated load of claim 1 , wherein the load section has a circular cross section.

5. The waveguide integrated load of claim 1 , wherein the load section has a D-shaped cross section.

6. The waveguide integrated load of claim 1 , wherein the length is shorter than a smallest cross-sectional dimension of the waveguide.

7. The waveguide integrated load of claim 1 , wherein the load section abuts the closed end.

8. The waveguide integrated load of claim 1 , wherein the load section is formed from a homogeneous material.

9. The waveguide integrated load of claim 1 , wherein the step and length are sized to provide an impedance match over a predefined frequency range for a single mode wave propagating within the waveguide.

10. The waveguide integrated load of claim 1 , wherein the load section is tubiform.

11. The waveguide integrated load of claim 1 , wherein the load section has a bore extending through the length of the load section.

12. The waveguide integrated load of claim 1 , wherein the load section has a substantially constant thickness in a direction perpendicular to the interior waveguide surface.

13. The waveguide integrated load of claim 12 , wherein the thickness is less than one eighth of a smallest cross-sectional dimension of the waveguide.

14. A compact waveguide load for installation into a waveguide having

an interior surface of a predefined shape, the waveguide load comprising:

a tubiform body having a length and a bore, the tubiform body comprising electromagnetic wave absorbing material, wherein the bore extends through the length of the tubiform body;

wherein an exterior surface of the body has a shape substantially congruent with the interior surface of the waveguide; and

wherein the interior bore and the length are sized to provide an impedance match to the waveguide over a predefined frequency range for a single waveguide mode.

15. The waveguide load of claim 14 , wherein the tubiform body has a cross section shape selected from the group consisting of circular, rectangular, and D-shaped.

16. The waveguide load of claim 14 , wherein the tubiform body is formed from a homogeneous material.

17. The waveguide load of claim 14 , wherein the tubiform body has a substantially constant thickness between the interior bore and the exterior surface.

18. The waveguide load of claim 17 , where the thickness is less than one eighth of a smallest cross-sectional dimension of the waveguide and the length is shorter than the smallest cross-sectional dimension of the waveguide.

19. A compact waveguide load for installation into a waveguide having an interior surface of a predefined shape, the waveguide load comprising:

a tubiform body having a length and a bore, the tubiform body comprising electromagnetic wave absorbing material, wherein the length of the tubiform body is shorter than a smallest cross-sectional dimension of the waveguide;

wherein an exterior surface of the body has a shape substantially congruent with the interior surface of the waveguide; and

wherein the interior bore and the length are sized to provide an impedance match to the waveguide over a predefined frequency range for a single waveguide mode.

20. The waveguide load of claim 19 , wherein the tubiform body has a cross section shape selected from the group consisting of circular, rectangular, and D-shaped.

21. The waveguide load of claim 19 , wherein the tubiform body is formed from a homogeneous material.

22. The waveguide load of claim 19 , wherein the tubiform body has a substantially constant thickness between the interior bore and the exterior surface.

23. The waveguide load of claim 22 , where the thickness is less than one eighth of a smallest cross-sectional dimension of the waveguide.
