METAL WOOD CLUB WITH IMPROVED HITTING FACE
A hitting face of a golf club head having improved strength properties. In one embodiment, the hitting face is made from multiple materials. The multiple materials form layers of a laminate construction of a flat portion of a hitting face insert. The layers of the laminate are joined together using a diffusion bonding technique. Preferably, at least one layer of the laminate is a thin layer of a very strong material that forms the rear side of the hitting face insert so as to prevent failure of the hitting face insert on that rear side due to repeated impacts with golf balls.
1 . A method of making a golf club head comprising the steps of:
(i) machining a first layer of a hitting face from a first material;
(ii) machining a second layer of a hitting face from a second material, wherein the second material has a significantly higher yield strength than the first material;
(iii) clamping the first and second layers together;
(iv) heating the clamped parts at a temperature that is less than a melting temperature of either of the materials for a specified duration.
2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of (v) cleaning the first and second parts prior to clamping.
3 . The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of (vi) scoring the first and second parts prior to clamping.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein steps (iii) and (iv) take place in an atmospherically controlled environment.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the atmospherically controlled environment comprises a vacuum.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the temperature of step (iv) is in the range of approximately 600 to 700 degrees centigrade.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the specified duration is in the range of approximately 0.5 to 10 hours.
