Abstract

A system for and method of converting successive bits of digital data into BPSK symbols using one or more BPSK symbol constellations such that orthogonal BPSK constellations are referenced to successive bits of the digital data. The system and method may toggle between referencing first and second orthogonal constellations as successive bits of the digital data are encountered. Alternatively, the system and method may successively rotate by 90° the constellation to be referenced as successive bits of the digital data are encountered. The reversal of the systems and methods described can be used to decode a transmission made by the methods described or specifically to reference a succession of orthogonal BPSK constellations to convert a succession of BPSK symbols to a succession of bits of digital data. Furthermore, a standard quadrature receiver can be used to perform the conversion.

Claims (34)

1. A system for converting BPSK symbols into digital data comprising:

first logic for converting successive BPSK symbols referencing one or more BPSK constellations into successive bits of digital data;

second logic for providing the one or more BPSK constellations to be referenced by the first logic in converting the BPSK symbols into digital data such that orthogonal BPSK constellations are referenced to successive BPSK symbols.

2. The system of claim 1 further comprising third logic for toggling a state bit between first and second states as successive BPSK symbols are encountered, wherein the second logic provides a first constellation to be referenced by the first logic if the state bit is in the first state, and provides a second constellation orthogonal to the first to be referenced by the first logic if the state bit is in the second state.

3. The system of claim 1 further wherein the second logic is configured to rotate the constellation to be referenced by the first logic by 90° as successive BPSK symbols are encountered.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the first logic comprises a first means for converting successive BSPK symbols into successive bits of the digital data using one or more BPSK constellations; and the second logic comprises a second means for providing the one or more BPSK constellations to be referenced by the first means in converting BPSK symbols into successive bits of the digital data such that orthogonal BPSK constellations are referenced to successive BPSK symbols.

5. A system for converting BPSK symbols into digital data comprising:

first logic for converting successive BPSK symbols referencing one or more BPSK constellations into successive bits of digital data;

second logic for providing the one or more BPSK constellations to be referenced by the first logic in converting the BPSK symbols into digital data such that orthogonal BPSK constellations are referenced to successive BPSK symbols;

a quadrature receiver wherein the bits of the digital data are selectively extracted and modified from the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) bit streams produced in the quadrature receiver based on referencing the one or more BPSK constellations.

6. A method of converting BPSK symbols into digital data comprising:

receiving a BPSK symbol and a next successive BPSK symbol;

converting, using first logic, the BPSK symbol into a bit of digital data referencing a first BPSK constellation;

converting, using first logic, the next successive BPSK symbol into a successive bit of digital data referencing a second BPSK constellation orthogonal to the first; and

outputting the bit of digital data and the successive bit of digital data.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising toggling between referencing the first BPSK and the second BPSK constellations as successive BPSK symbols are encountered.

8. The method of claim 6 further comprising successively rotating a BPSK constellation by 90° as successive BPSK symbols are encountered, and referencing the rotated BPSK constellation to convert successive BPSK symbols.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein each BPSK symbol comprises I and Q components, further comprising receiving a modulated signal over a wireless interface and quadrature demodulating the modulated signal with the I and Q components of successive BPSK symbols from a carrier signal.

10. The method of claim 6 further comprising despreading digital data produced by converting of BPSK symbols.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the despreading is based on a spreading sequence which is a pseudo-random noise (PN) code.

12. The method of claim 6 further comprising differentially decoding digital data produced by converting of BPSK symbols.

13. A system configured to receive a signal modulated by a predetermined sequence of orthogonal BPSK constellations comprising:

a quadrature receiver generating a sequence of in-phase and quadrature bits; and

a baseband processor configured to extract based on the predetermined sequence of orthogonal BPSK constellations a bit sequence from the in-phase and quadrature bits.

14. The system of claim 13 wherein each BPSK constellation in the predetermined sequence of orthogonal BPSK constellation is selected from a set consisting of an in-phase BPSK constellation, a 90° rotated BPSK constellation, a 180° rotated BPSK constellation, and a 270° rotated BPSK constellation.

15. The system of claim 14 wherein the baseband processor generates the bit sequence by extracting a bit from the in-phase bits when an in-phase BPSK constellation is encountered in the predetermined sequence;

extracting a bit from the quadrature bits when 90° rotated BPSK constellation is encountered in the predetermined sequence;

extracting a logical complement of a bit from the in-phase bits when a 180° rotated BPSK constellation is encountered in the predetermined sequence; and

extracting a bit from the quadrature bits when a 270° rotated BPSK constellation is encountered in the predetermined sequence.

16. The system of claim 13 wherein the predetermined sequence is a sequence which alternates between two orthogonal BPSK constellations.

17. The system of claim 13 wherein the predetermined sequence is a sequence where consecutive BPSK constellations differ by a 90° rotation.

18. The system of claim 13 further comprising a despreader for despreading digital data produced by the bit sequence.

19. The system of claim 18 wherein despreader despreads digital data based on a spreading sequence which is a pseudo-random noise (PN) code.

20. The system of claim 13 further comprising differential decoder digital data produced by the bit sequence.
