Dental implant with improved osseointegration features
View Patent ↗Dental implants made at least in part of a highly porous biomaterial such as porous tantalum for enhancing the osseointegration of the dental implant into surrounding bone. For example, there is provided a dental implant which includes a core formed of with a head portion having an abutment interface and a stem portion extending from the head portion. A porous tantalum sleeve is disposed about the stem portion and occupies a substantial portion of the implant/bone interface of the implant. After implantation of the implant, bone tissue may osseointegrate into the porous tantalum sleeve to anchor the implant in position within the surrounding bone. Other embodiments of implants are provided, each implant including at least a portion thereof formed of porous tantalum for improved osseointegration.
1. A dental implant, comprising:
an elongated implant body having opposed coronal and apical ends;
an abutment connector having correspondingly opposed coronal and apical ends, the abutment connector including a recess for receiving the coronal end of the body at the apical end of the abutment connector, the apical end of the abutment connector defining a non-threaded press-fit connection between the abutment connector and the coronal end of the body, the abutment connector being adapted for connection to an abutment at its coronal end, the abutment connector further defining a core extending from its coronal end to its apical end;
both the implant body and abutment connector having correspondingly aligned bores configured for receiving a retaining screw;
wherein the implant body further comprises a plurality of reinforcing members embedded within the body.
2. A dental implant, comprising:
an elongated implant body of porous tantalum having opposed coronal and apical ends, the body defining a longitudinal, central axis;
a plurality of reinforcing members extending within the body, the members being generally aligned with, but angled inwardly with respect to, the central axis of the body in a direction extending from the coronal to the apical end of the body, each of the plurality of reinforcing members being configured as an elongated bar, and at least one of the plurality of reinforcing members being spaced radially from the longitudinal, central axis by at least a portion of the porous tantalum of the body;
an abutment connector disposed on the coronal end of the body, the plurality of reinforcing members extending from the abutment connector;
wherein the dental implant further comprises a core made of a different material from the body and extending along the longitudinal, central axis and spaced from the plurality of reinforcing members.
3. The dental implant of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of reinforcing members are generally uniformly spaced around the longitudinal, central axis.
4. The dental implant of claim 2 , wherein the body has a varying cross-sectional dimension.
