Abstract

A remote control device communicates remote control discovery information to a receiver. The remote control device is used to control a particular electronic consumer device. The remote control discovery information may, for example, include: a codeset identifier that identifies a codeset stored in the remote control device, device information, diagnostic information, and/or marketing information. The device information may include a device description, and/or device characteristics information that correspond to the electronic consumer device. In one example, the receiver is a set-top box that is connected to a central database through a network. The remote control discovery information may be used to identify the remote control device and the corresponding electronic consumer device. In addition, the remote control discovery information may also be used for diagnostic and marketing purposes.

Claims (9)

1. A method comprising:

causing a remote control device to be placed into a setup mode in which a codeset having a codeset identifier is assigned for use by the remote control device to command functional operations of an intended target device when the remote control is subsequently placed into an operating mode; and

causing the remote control device to be placed into a discovery mode in which each of plural types of different remote control discovery information is associated with a corresponding one of a plurality of input elements of the remote control device and in which the remote control device will respond to an activation of a first one of the plurality of input elements of the remote control device by transmitting the codeset identifier for the codeset that was assigned for use by the remote control device when the remote control device was previously placed into the setup mode to a set top box whereby the set top box will cause information representative of the transmitted codeset identifier to be displayed on a display device associated with the set top box and in which the remote control device will respond to an activation of a second one of the plurality of input elements of the remote control device by transmitting data indicative of a diagnostic condition of the remote control device to the set top box whereby the set top box will cause information representative of the diagnostic condition of the remote control device to be displayed on the display device associated with the set top box; and

wherein the setup mode and the discovery mode of the remote control device are separate and distinct and wherein the remote control device is caused to be placed into the setup mode and the discovery mode via use of different input element activations of the plurality of input elements of the remote control device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the codeset identifier uniquely identifies a codeset stored in the remote control device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the intended target device is the display device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the diagnostic condition of the remote control device comprises a battery charge condition of the remote control device.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the remote control device will respond to an activation of a third one of the plurality of input elements of the remote control device whilst in the discovery mode by transmitting a consumer electronic device identifier to the set top box whereby the set top box will cause information representative of the transmitted consumer electronic device identifier to be displayed on the display device associated with the set top box, wherein the consumer electronic device identifier comprises data indicative of a device brand and a device type.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the consumer electronic device identifier corresponds to a consumer electronic device the remote control device is currently configured to command functional operations of.
