Abstract

A method of retrofitting a power system to a mobile work station includes coupling a replacement power system with the mobile work station in place of an existing power system, establishing a power link between a power interface and a docking station for a removable battery, and establishing a communication link between a power control system and a detector configured to detect user interaction with a removable battery docked with the docking station.

Claims (35)

1. A method of retrofitting a power system to a mobile workstation comprising the steps of:

coupling a replacement power system with a wheeled frame of the mobile workstation in place of an existing power system;

establishing a power link between a power interface of the replacement power system and a docking station for a removable battery of the replacement power system; and

establishing a communication link between a switching device and a detector of the replacement power system configured to detect user interaction with the removable battery, such that the switching device outputs a power source switching command to the power interface in response to detecting user interaction with the removable battery.

The method of claim 1 further comprising a step of removing an existing battery assembly of the existing power system from a mount located under a base of the mobile workstation, wherein the coupling step further includes swapping a housing for the power control system with the existing battery assembly.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising the steps of:

changing a location of a center of gravity of the mobile workstation at least in part via the step of removing an existing battery assembly; and

compensating for changing the location of the center of gravity at least in part by placing a ballast in place of the existing battery assembly and coupled with the housing for the power control system.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the coupling step further comprises a step of mounting the docking station to a frame of the mobile workstation at a first location vertically between the base and a computerized device monitor supported via the frame at a second location vertically above the base.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the step of mounting the docking station further comprises orienting a guide of the docking station in a non-horizontal orientation to enable gravity assisted engagement of a removable battery assembly in the guide.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising a step of docking a removable battery assembly with the docking station, wherein the docking step includes the step of establishing a communication link.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the step of establishing a communication link further comprises establishing a communication link between a microprocessor of the power control system and a sensor resident on the removable battery assembly.

8. A power system retrofit kit for a mobile workstation comprising:

a docking station for a removable battery, the docking station being configured to mount to a wheeled frame of the mobile workstation;

a power interface configured to receive power from a removable battery docked with the docking station for supplying power to a computerized device of the mobile workstation;

a detector configured to detect user interaction with a removable battery docked with the docking station; and

a switching device configured to couple with the detector and further configured to output a power source switching command to the power interface in response to detecting user interaction with the removable battery.

9. The kit of claim 8 further comprising a removable battery assembly which includes a battery, configured to dock with the docking station, and wherein the detector comprises a sensor which is resident on the removable battery assembly.

The kit of claim 9 wherein the docking station further comprises a holster having an open end and an opposite blind end, the holster further defining a guide extending from the open end to the blind end and having a shape, and wherein the removable battery assembly includes a housing having a shape complementary to the shape of the guide.

The kit of claim 10 wherein the switching device comprises a microprocessor configured to receive signals from the sensor, the kit further comprising an LCD display configured to display charge state data of the removable battery assembly and a communication link connecting the LCD display with the microprocessor.

12. The kit of claim 11 wherein the LCD display is positioned on the holster.

13. The kit of claim 8 comprising a control system housing having mounting elements which correspond with mounting elements of an existing battery assembly of the mobile workstation.

14. The kit of claim 13 further comprising a back-up battery, wherein the back-up battery, the power interface and the switching device are each positioned in the control system housing.

15. The kit of claim 14 further comprising a ballast which includes at least one ballast plate coupled with the control system housing.

16. A mobile workstation comprising:

a frame which includes a base having an upper side, a lower side and a plurality of wheels mounted at the lower side;

a computerized device mounted to the frame;

a power system for supplying power to the computerized device, the power system including a power interface and a battery docking station electrically connected with the power interface;

a removable battery assembly configured to dock with the battery docking station;

a detector configured to detect user interaction with the removable battery assembly;

a switching device coupled with the detector and configured to output a power source switching command to the power interface responsive to detecting user interaction with the removable battery assembly.

The mobile workstation of claim 16 comprising a retrofitted workstation where the power system is a retrofitted power system, the mobile workstation further having a set of battery mounting elements at a first location, and further including a retrofit mounting bracket mounting the battery docking station at a second location which is different from the first location.

The mobile workstation of claim 17 wherein the mobile workstation defines a vertical axis extending through the lower side and the upper side of the base, wherein the first location is at the lower side of the base and wherein the second location is vertically above the first location and vertically between the base and the computerized device.

The mobile workstation of claim 18 wherein the frame further includes a support arm assembly extending vertically upwardly from the base, and wherein the holster is mounted in an exposed position on the support arm assembly with the open end positioned vertically higher than the blind end to enable gravity assisted engagement of the removable battery assembly in the battery docking station.

20. The mobile workstation of claim 18 wherein the detector comprises a sensor resident on the removable battery assembly.
