Abstract

A power supply unit for a mobile computerized device includes a housing having a handle, a battery positioned within the housing, and a detector configured to detect user interaction with the handle. The power supply unit may comprise a removable power supply unit for a mobile computerized device, having a detector generating a signal in response to detecting user interaction with the handle.

Claims (43)

1. A power supply unit for a mobile computerized device comprising:

a housing including a handle for coupling and decoupling the power supply unit with the mobile computerized device;

a battery positioned within the housing;

an electrical connector configured to electrically connect the power supply unit with the mobile computerized device when coupled therewith; and

a detector configured to detect user interaction with the handle and generate a signal in response to detecting user interaction with the handle, the detector having a first output state and a second output state comprising a user interaction state;

the power supply unit further having a first on-state where electrical power is discharged from the battery to the electrical connector and the detector is in the first output state, and a second on-state where electrical power is discharged from the battery to the electrical connector and the detector is in the second output state; and

the power supply unit further including an off-state where electrical power is not discharged from the battery to the electrical connector, and the power supply unit being configured to switch from the second on-state to the off-state in response to the signal.

2. The power supply unit of claim 1 wherein the detector comprises a sensor mounted to the housing.

3. The power supply unit of claim 2 wherein the housing further comprises a key configured to orient the power supply unit for coupling with a battery docking station of the mobile computerized device.

4. The power supply unit of claim 3 wherein the key comprises a longitudinal flute formed on one of the first and second housing pieces.

5. The power supply unit of claim 2 further comprising a segment of a power supply circuit connecting the battery with the electrical connector, and a segment of a communication link connecting the sensor with the electrical connector.

6. The power supply unit of claim 5 wherein the sensor comprises a proximity sensor located within the handle of the housing.

7. The power supply unit of claim 5 wherein the sensor comprises a thermal sensor located within the handle of the housing.

8. The power supply unit of claim 2 wherein the battery comprises a rechargeable battery, the power supply unit further comprising a data bus coupled with the battery and an indicating device located on the housing and also coupled with the data bus.

The power supply unit of claim 8 wherein the electrical energy cell comprises a lithium polymer battery having a power to weight ratio of about 5 Amp-hours per pound or greater, the data bus comprises a smart management bus and the indicating device comprises a fuel gauge for the battery, the power supply unit further comprising a memory configured to store a battery charging cycle count for the battery.

10. A power supply unit for a mobile computerized device comprising:

a housing including a handle for coupling and decoupling the power supply unit with the mobile computerized device;

a battery positioned within the housing;

an electrical connector configured to electrically connect the power supply unit with the mobile computerized device when coupled therewith; and

a detector configured to detect user interaction with the handle and generate a signal in response to detecting user interaction with the handle;

wherein the detector comprises a sensor mounted to the housing, the sensor having a first output state and a second output state comprising a user interaction state; and

wherein the housing comprises a first end and a second, opposite end, wherein the handle is located at the first end of the housing and the electrical connector is located at the second end of the housing, and wherein the housing comprises a narrowing taper from the first end toward the second end.

11. The power supply unit of claim 10 wherein the housing comprises a longitudinal axis and has a uniform width dimension oriented normal to the longitudinal axis and a non-uniform width dimension oriented normal to the longitudinal axis and defining the narrowing taper.

12. The power supply unit of claim 11 wherein:

the housing comprises a two-piece housing having a first housing piece whereupon the key is located, and a second housing piece, one of the first and second housing pieces defining an aperture; and

the electrical connector comprises a pin-type connector disposed within the housing and aligned with the aperture.

13. The power supply unit of claim 12 wherein the key comprises an exvolute flute.

14. A mobile computerized device comprising:

a frame and a docking station for a removable power supply unit mounted to the frame, and an electrical power system electrically connected to the docking station; and

a removable power supply unit configured to couple with the docking station, the removable power supply unit including a housing having a handle, a battery positioned within the housing and a detector configured to detect user interaction with the handle and generate a signal responsive to detecting user interaction with the handle;

the power supply unit having an on-state where electrical power is discharged from the battery to the electrical power system, and an off-state where electrical power is not discharged from the battery to the electrical power system; and

the mobile computerized device further comprising a control device configured to receive the signal and responsively command switching the power supply unit from the on-state to the off-state.

The mobile computerized device of claim 14 comprising a mobile computer workstation having a wheeled base mounted at a first location adjacent one end of the frame and a computer monitor mounted at a second location adjacent an opposite end of the frame, the docking station being mounted at a third location between the first location and the second location.

16. The mobile computerized device of claim 15 wherein the detector comprises a proximity sensor mounted to the housing of the removable power supply unit.

17. The mobile computerized device of claim 15 wherein:

the housing comprises a first end and a second, opposite end, the handle being located at the first end of the housing and the power supply unit including an electrical connector located at the second end of the housing and connecting with the battery; and

the housing further comprises a narrowing taper from the first end toward the second end and a longitudinal axis, the housing having a uniform width dimension oriented normal to the longitudinal axis and a non-uniform width dimension also oriented normal to the longitudinal axis and defining the narrowing taper.

18. A method of operating a power supply unit for a mobile computerized device comprising the steps of:

discharging a battery of the power supply unit to an electrical power system for the mobile computerized device;

detecting user interaction with a handle of a housing for the power supply unit;

generating a signal in response to detecting user interaction with the handle; and

commanding discharging of the battery to the electrical power system to cease, responsive to the signal.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the step of detecting user interaction with the handle further comprises sensing user proximity to the handle or sensing user contact with the handle, and wherein the step of generating a signal comprises outputting a signal from the sensor to a communication link of the power supply unit.
