Abstract

An automated banking machine can receive user card data from a cell phone. The phone stores the card data of several selectable cards, including electronic account number data. The machine generates and displays a random number correlated with a time period. A machine user manually inputs the displayed random number into their phone. A software application in the phone encrypts the selected card data along with the inputted random number data. The phone displays a bar code image containing the encrypted data. The banking machine includes a bar code reader which can read the displayed image. The machine causes the read data to be decrypted. The random number is used to verify the current transaction session. Thereafter, the user may provide other inputs, including PIN input. The process replaces physical insertion of a card yet allows secure input of the card data. Possible data interception from activities requiring card insertion are also reduced.

Claims (52)

1. Apparatus comprising:

an automated banking machine,

wherein the automated banking machine includes a card data reader device,

wherein the reader device is operative to read imaged card data corresponding to a customer account number and a second number which differs from the customer account number,

wherein the reader device is operative to read imaged card data while the imaged card data is located outside of the automated banking machine,

at least one computer,

wherein the at least one computer is operative to generate a random number,

wherein the at least one computer is in operative connection with the reader device,

wherein subsequent to imaged card data reading operation of the reader device, the at least one computer is operative to determine the customer account number and the second number corresponding to the read imaged card data,

wherein the at least one computer is operative to determine whether the second number corresponds to the random number,

wherein subsequent to customer account number determining operation of the at least one computer, the automated banking machine is operative to carry out a transaction involving the customer account number.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one computer is operative to determine whether the second number corresponds to the random number, within a predetermined time period.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein responsive to a positive determination of the second number corresponding to the random number, the at least one computer operates to determine a customer account number from the imaged card data read with the reader device.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the automated banking machine includes a display device, wherein the automated banking machine is operative to display the random number via the display device, enabling view of the random number by a user of the automated banking machine.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the reader device is operative to read an encrypted image including both a customer account number and the random number.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the encrypted image comprises a bar code.

7. The apparatus according to claim 5 and further comprising a mobile phone including at least one phone computer, wherein the phone is operative to generate the encrypted image.

8. The apparatus according to claim 7 wherein the phone includes a phone display screen, wherein the phone is operative to display the encrypted image on the phone display screen, wherein the encrypted image includes the imaged card data.

9. The apparatus according to claim 7 wherein the reader device is operative to read the encrypted image on the phone display screen while the display screen is positioned adjacent to and facing the reader device.

10. The apparatus according to claim 8 wherein the encrypted image comprises a bar code, wherein the reader device comprises a bar code scanner device, wherein the bar code scanner device is operative to scan a bar code displayed on the phone display screen.

11. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one computer is remotely located from the automated banking machine.

12. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the automated banking machine includes at least one cash dispenser, wherein the automated banking machine is operative to carry out a cash dispense transaction involving both the customer account number and the at least one cash dispenser.

13. The apparatus according to claim 1 and further comprising a mobile phone, wherein the mobile phone includes a phone display screen, and wherein the phone display screen is operative to output the imaged card data, and wherein the reader device is operative to read the imaged card data output from the phone display screen.

14. The apparatus according to claim 13

wherein the mobile phone includes at least one mobile phone input device, wherein the mobile phone is operative to output the imaged card data responsive to at least one phone input through the at least one phone input device,

wherein the at least one phone input corresponds to a selected financial account, wherein the selected financial account corresponds to the customer account number.

15. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the imaged card data comprises an image including a two-dimensional bar code.

16. Apparatus comprising:

at least one computer,

wherein the at least one computer is operable to generate different verification codes,

wherein the at least one computer is in operative connection with an image reader operable to read respective images while the respective images are located outside of an automated transaction machine,

wherein the at least one computer is configured to determine whether at least one image

read at a location outside of the automated transaction machine by the image reader,

includes code data that corresponds to a verification code previously generated by the at least one computer,

wherein the at least one computer is operative responsive at least in part to a positive determination, to allow a transaction involving a customer account number that corresponds to account data included in the at least one image, to proceed at the automated transaction machine.

17. The apparatus according to claim 16

wherein the at least one computer is configured to determine whether the at least one image read by the image reader includes the account data that corresponds to the customer account number,

wherein the at least one computer is operative responsive at least in part to a positive determination that the at least one image includes the account data that corresponds to the customer account number, to allow the transaction to proceed.

18. The apparatus according to claim 17

wherein the at least one computer is configured to determine from a read encrypted image, both the code data and the account data.

19. The apparatus according to claim 18 wherein the at least one computer is configured to determine from a read encrypted two-dimensional bar code, both the code data and the account data.

20. The apparatus according to claim 16 wherein the at least one computer is in operative connection with an automated transaction machine, wherein the automated transaction machine includes the image reader and at least one cash dispenser, wherein the image reader is operable to read respective images while the respective images are located outside of the automated transaction machine.

21. The apparatus according to claim 16 wherein the at least one computer is operable to generate random codes, and wherein the verification code comprises a randomly-generated code.

22. The apparatus according to claim 16 and further comprising the automated transaction machine, wherein the automated transaction machine includes the image reader and the at least one computer.

23. Apparatus comprising:

at least one computer,

wherein the at least one computer is configured to determine from an encrypted image read by an image reader of an automated transaction machine, an input code that was previously generated by the at least one computer for customer use in providing a customer account number to the automated transaction machine,

wherein the at least one computer is configured to subsequently use a decryption code that corresponds to the input code determined, to further determine the customer account number from the encrypted image,

wherein the at least one computer is configured to subsequently allow a transaction involving the customer account number determined, to proceed at the automated transaction machine.

24. The apparatus according to claim 23

wherein the at least one computer is configured to determine from an encrypted bar code read by the image reader, both the input code and the customer account number.

25. The apparatus according to claim 23 wherein the at least one computer is operable to generate random codes, and wherein the input code comprises a randomly-generated code.
