Abstract

A printer unit is arranged to print documents received from a computer system. The printer unit has a print engine having control electronics. The control electronics are configured to receive document image data from the computer system in the form of a compressed, multi-layer page image. They buffer the image and expand the image to generate an expanded contone layer, a black layer and a layer for infrared printing.

Claims (14)

1. A printer unit arranged to print documents received from a computer system, the printer unit comprising

a print engine having control electronics that are configured to:

receive document image data from the computer system in the form of a compressed, multi-layer page image;

buffer the image; and

expand the image to generate an expanded contone layer, a black layer and a layer for infrared printing; and

a bay for receiving a printhead cartridge, the bay having a pivoting cover for covering the received printhead cartridge,

wherein the control electronics is brought into contact with electronics of the printhead cartridge upon pivoting of the cover.

2. A printer unit as claimed in claim 1 , in which the control electronics are configured to dither the contone layer.

3. A printer unit as claimed in claim 2 , in which the control electronics are configured to composite the black layer over the dithered contone layer.

4. A printer unit as claimed in claim 3 , in which the control electronics are configured to render coded to form the layer for infrared printing.

5. A printer unit as claimed in claim 4 , in which the control electronics are configured to combine the black, dithered contone and infrared layers to form a page that is supplied to a printhead for printing.

6. A printer unit as claimed in claim 5 , in which the control electronics are configured to divide data associated with the document to be printed into a high-resolution bi-level mask layer for text and line art and a medium-resolution contone color image layer for images or background colors.

7. A printer unit as claimed in claim 1 , in which the control electronics define a distributor for converting the document image data from a proprietary representation into a hardware-specific representation and for ensuring that the data is sent to appropriate hardware devices whilst observing any constraints or requirements on data transmission to such devices.

8. A printer unit as claimed in claim 1 , in which the control electronics is configured such that the expanding of the compressed data into layers is based on content that follows the base mode Mixed Raster Content (MRC) mode.
