Abstract

A diverter valve is disclosed and may comprise an actively cooled valve actuation section, an actuator, and a valve section comprising a rotationally actuated valve plate that is structured to be rotationally actuated by the actuator to direct flow wherein the actuation section may be thermally insulated from the valve actuation section.

Claims (16)

1. A diverter valve for use with a hydrogen reformate-producing reformer comprising:

an actively cooled valve actuation section comprising an inlet port in fluid communication with an air supply and an outlet port in fluid communication with an inlet of a reformer;

an actuator; and

a valve section comprising an inlet port in fluid communication with a hydrogen reformate outlet of the reformer and a rotationally actuated valve plate that is structured to be rotationally actuated by the actuator to direct hydrogen reformate and wherein the sections are structured to be thermally insulated from each other.

2. The diverter valve of claim 1 wherein the rotationally actuated valve plate is structured to be self-cleaning of reformate deposits as it rotates.

3. The diverter valve of claim 1 wherein the valve section is formed of materials suitable for operation at temperatures up to about 900° C.

4. The diverter valve of claim 3 wherein materials suitable for operation at temperatures up to about 900° C. may include materials from the group consisting of ceramic, alumina, mullite, or steatite.

5. A diverter valve for use with a hydrogen reformate-producing reformer comprising:

an actively cooled valve actuation section;

an actuator; and

a valve section comprising a chamber housing, a base adjoining the chamber housing and cooperating with the chamber housing to form a chamber, an inlet port located in one of the chamber housing or the base, said inlet port in fluid communication with a hydrogen reformate outlet of a reformer, a rotationally actuated valve plate located between the chamber housing and the base, wherein the valve plate is structured to be rotationally actuated by the actuator to direct hydrogen reformate and wherein the sections are structured to be thermally insulated from each other, and an outlet port located in the other of said chamber housing or base for discharging hydrogen reformate from the chamber.

6. The diverter valve of claim 5 wherein the rotationally actuated valve plate is structured to be self-cleaning of reformate deposits as it rotates.

7. The diverter valve of claim 5 wherein the valve section is formed of materials suitable for operation at temperatures up to about 900° C.

8. The diverter valve of claim 5 wherein materials suitable for operation at temperatures up to about 900° C. may include materials from the group consisting of ceramic, alumina, mullite, or steatite.

9. The diverter valve of claim 5 wherein the valve plate comprises at least one aperture in fluid communication with the chamber.

10. The diverter valve of claim 5 wherein the actively cooled valve actuation section includes ports for sending air through the valve actuation section before the air it is sent to an air inlet port of the reformer.
