Abstract

Methods and apparatuses identifying a co-channel interference signal in communications systems are disclosed. An exemplary method comprises generating an interference signal by subtracting a reconstructed desired signal from an at least partially demodulated composite signal, and generating synchronization statistics of interference signal using different scrambling codes. The interference signal is identified as the signal associated with the scrambling code that was used to generate an interference signal having a desired synchronization statistic.

Claims (42)

1. In a system receiving a composite signal comprising a desired signal having desired data and an interference signal having interfering data having a plurality of frames, a method of identifying the interference signal, comprising the steps of:

(a) demodulating the composite signal to produce the desired data;

(b) remodulating the desired data to generate a reconstructed desired signal;

(c) subtracting the reconstructed desired signal from an at least partially demodulated composite signal to generate the interference signal;

(d) at least partially demodulating the interference signal using a first scrambling code of a plurality of scrambling codes to produce a first demodulated interference signal;

(e) computing a histogram of a frame synchronization statistic of the first demodulated interference signal;

(f) repeating steps (d) through (e) to produce additional demodulated interference signals to form a plurality of demodulated interference signals that includes the first demodulated interference signal and to generate a plurality of histograms of the frame synchronization statistics, one histogram for each of the plurality of scrambling codes; and

(g) identifying the interference signal as one of the plurality of demodulated interference signals associated with the histogram having the lowest variance of the plurality of histograms.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the step of demodulating the composite signal comprises the step of demodulating and decoding the composite signal to produce the desired data; and

the step of remodulating the desired data comprises the step of recoding and remodulating the desired data to generate the reconstructed desired signal.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the each of the plurality of frames of the interfering data comprises a header scrambled by one of the plurality of scrambling codes.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the interference signal comprises a pilot block, and the pilot block is scrambled using one of the plurality of scrambling codes.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the interference signal comprises a first payload portion scrambled using one of the plurality of scrambling codes.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the one of the scrambling codes is a Gold code.

7. A system for identifying an interference signal from a received composite signal comprising a desired signal having desired data and an interference signal comprising interference data having a plurality of frames, comprising:

means for demodulating the received composite signal to produce the desired data;

means for remodulating the desired data to generate a reconstructed desired signal;

means for subtracting the reconstructed desired signal from an at least partially demodulated composite signal to generate the interference signal;

means for generating a plurality of at least partially demodulated interference signals from the interference signal, each of the plurality of at least partially demodulated interference signals generated with one of a plurality of associated scrambling codes;

means for computing a plurality of histograms, the plurality of histograms comprising a histogram of a frame synchronization statistic for each of the plurality of at least partially demodulated interference signals; and

means for identifying the interference signal according to a comparison of the plurality of histograms, wherein the interference signal is identified as one of the plurality of at least partially demodulated interference signals associated with the histogram having the lowest variance of the plurality of histograms.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein:

the means for demodulating the composite signal to produce the desired data comprises means for demodulating and decoding the received composite signal to produce the desired data; and

the means for remodulating the desired data to generate the reconstructed desired signal comprises means for recoding and remodulating the desired data to generate the reconstructed desired signal.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the each of the plurality of frames of the interfering data comprises a header scrambled by one of the plurality of associated scrambling codes.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the interference signal comprises a pilot block, and the pilot block is scrambled using one of the plurality of associated scrambling codes.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the interference signal comprises a first payload portion scrambled using one of the plurality of associated scrambling codes.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one of the scrambling codes is a Gold code.

13. A system for identifying an interference signal from a received composite signal comprising a desired signal having desired data and an interference signal having a plurality of frames comprising interference data, comprising:

a demodulator for demodulating the composite signal to produce the desired data;

a remodulator, coupled to the demodulator for remodulating the desired data to generate a reconstructed desired signal;

a subtractor, coupled to the remodulator demodulator, the subtractor for subtracting the reconstructed desired signal from an at least partially demodulated composite signal to generate the interference signal;

a timing recovery loop, coupled to the subtractor, the timing recovery loop for generating a plurality of at least partially demodulated interference signals from the interference signal, each of the plurality of at least partially demodulated interference signals generated with one of a plurality of associated scrambling codes; and

a signal analyzer, coupled to a second demodulator for computing a plurality of histograms, the plurality of histograms comprising a histogram of a frame synchronization statistic for each of the plurality of at least partially demodulated interference signals and for identifying the interference signal as one of the plurality of at least partially demodulated interference signals having the lowest variance of the plurality of histograms.

14. The system of claim 13 , further comprising:

a decoder coupled between the demodulator and the remodulator; and

a recoder, coupled between the demodulator and the subtractor.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the each of the plurality of frames of the interfering data comprises a header scrambled by one of the plurality of associated scrambling codes.

16. The system of claim 13 , wherein the interference signal comprises a pilot block, and the pilot block is scrambled using one of the plurality of associated scrambling codes.

17. The system of claim 13 , wherein the interference data comprises a first payload portion scrambled using one of the plurality of associated scrambling codes.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the one of the scrambling codes is a Gold code.
