Abstract

The present invention provides a system and method for identifying and transferring digital media assets within a system through the use of identification data. The identification data is applied to each transferred copy and includes data specific to the customer and digital media asset. To facilitate transfers and ease of use the digital media assets can be made DRM-free.

Claims (38)

1. A system for distributing digital assets over a computer network, the system comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more memories operatively coupled to the one or more processors and storing instructions that, when executed by at least one of the one or more processors, cause the system to:

embed at least a customer identification associated with a customer and an asset identification associated with an instance of a digital asset in the instance of the digital asset, the instance of the digital asset including digital content and at least one other portion that does not include the digital content, wherein the customer identification and the asset identification are embedded in the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset, wherein other instances of the digital asset have unique identifiers embedded therein and the unique identifiers are used to track instances of the digital asset;

detect a transfer of the instance of the digital asset to a client device;

modify a transaction record associated with the transfer based on the asset identification; and

debit an account of the customer related to the transfer of the instance of the digital asset.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a tag portion of the instance of the digital asset.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a comments section of the tag portion.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a title field of the instance of the digital asset.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a portion of the digital asset that is at least one of prepended and postpended to user perceptible content of the instance of the digital asset.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a blank portion of the instance of the digital asset.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the client device is a portable device capable of rendering the content of the instance of the digital asset.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed by at least one of the one or more processors, further cause the system to embed a corresponding customer identification associated with a customer and a corresponding asset identification associated with an instance of the first digital asset for each transferred instance of the digital asset.

9. A method computer implemented method for distributing digital assets over a computer network using one or more computing devices, the method comprising:

at least one of the one or more computing devices embedding at least a customer identification associated with a customer and an asset identification associated with an instance of a digital asset in the instance of the digital asset, the instance of the digital asset including digital content and at least one other portion that does not include the digital content, wherein the customer identification and the asset identification are embedded in the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset, wherein other instances of the digital asset have unique identifiers therein and the unique identifiers are used to track instances of the digital asset;

at least one of the one or more computing devices detecting a transfer of the instance of the digital asset to a client device; and

at least one of the one or more computing devices modifying a transaction record associated with the transfer based on the asset identification; and

at least one of the one or more computing devices debiting an account of the customer related to the transfer of the instance of the digital asset.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the embedding comprises embedding the customer identification and the asset identification in a tag portion of the instance of the digital asset.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a comments section of the tag portion.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a title field of the instance of the digital asset.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a portion of the instance of the digital asset that is at least one of prepended and postpended to user perceptible content of instance of the digital asset.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a blank portion of the instance of the digital asset.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the client device is a portable device capable of rendering the content of the instance of the digital asset.

16. The method of claim 9 , further comprising embedding a corresponding customer identification associated with a customer and a corresponding asset identification associated with an instance of the first digital asset for each transferred instance of the digital asset.

17. Tangible Non transitory computer readable media having computer executable instructions recorded thereon for distributing digital assets over a computer network, the instructions when executed by a computer device causing the device to:

embed at least a customer identification associated with a customer and an asset identification associated with an instance of a digital asset in the instance of the digital asset, the instance of the digital asset including digital content and at least one other portion that does not include the digital content, wherein the customer identification and the asset identification are embedded in the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset, wherein other instances of the digital asset have unique identifiers embedded therein and the unique identifiers are used to track instances of the digital asset;

detect a transfer of the instance of the digital asset to a client device;

modify a transaction record associated with the transfer based on the asset identification; and

debit an account of the customer related to the transfer of the instance of the digital asset.

18. The media of claim 17 , wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a tag portion of the instance of the digital asset.

19. The media of claim 18 , wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a comments section of the tag portion.

20. The media of claim 17 , wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a title field of the instance of the digital asset.

21. The media of claim 17 , wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a portion of the instance of the digital asset that is at least one of prepended and postpended to user perceptible content of instance of the digital asset.

22. The media of claim 17 , wherein the at least one other portion of the instance of the digital asset is a blank portion of the instance of the digital asset.

23. The media of claim 17 , wherein the client device is a portable device capable of rendering the content of the instance of the digital asset.

24. The media of claim 17 , wherein the instructions, when executed by at least one of the one or more processors, further cause the system to embed a corresponding customer identification associated with a customer and a corresponding asset identification associated with an instance of the first digital asset for each transferred instance of the digital asset.
