Microalloyed spring
View Patent ↗The systems and methods described herein include innerspring assemblies or innerspring cores for use with cushioning articles such as mattresses. The innerspring core may have one or more coil springs formed from a high-carbon steel wire alloyed with one or more suitable alloying elements such as titanium and copper and capable of imparting greater strength and durability to the innerspring core.
1. A coil spring in an innerspring assembly in a cushioning article, comprising
a high-carbon steel wire coiled into a helical spring and alloyed with an alloying element, wherein the high carbon steel wire includes carbon that is from about 0.50 to about 0.99 weight percent of the spring, wherein the high carbon steel wire has a diameter of 0.04 to 0.11 inches (1.016 to 2.794 millimeters);
wherein the alloying element comprises titanium, silicon, and copper, the titanium ranging from 0.001 to about 0.1 weight percent of the spring, the silicon ranging from 0.001 to less than 0.55 weight percent of the spring, and the copper ranging from 0.1 to about 0.3 weight percent of the spring, and wherein a total amount of the alloying element is from 0.001 to 2 weight percent of the spring.
2. The coil spring of claim 1 , wherein the titanium is from about 0.001 to about 0.01 weight percent of the spring.
3. The coil spring of claim 1 , wherein the alloying element further includes manganese that is from about 0.3 to about 0.9 weight percent of the spring.
4. The coil spring of claim 1 , wherein the alloying element further includes vanadium that is from about 0.001 to about 0.23 weight percent of the spring.
5. The coil spring of claim 1 , wherein the alloying element further includes molybdenum that is from about 0.001 to about 1.15 weight percent of the spring.
6. The coil spring of claim 1 , wherein the alloying element further includes niobium that is from about 0.001 to about 0.1 weight percent of the spring.
7. The coil spring of claim 1 , wherein the spring includes from about 10 to about 30 times more copper than titanium.
8. The coil spring of claim 1 , wherein the spring includes about four times more carbon than the at least one alloying element.
9. The coil spring of claim 1 , wherein the steel wire includes a plurality of strands.
10. The coil spring of claim 1 , further comprising an encasing material formed around the helical spring.
11. A coil spring in an innerspring assembly in a cushioning article, comprising
a carbon steel wire coiled into a helical spring and alloyed with an alloying element, wherein the high carbon steel wire has a diameter of 0.04 to 0.11 inches (1.016 to 2.794 millimeters);
wherein the carbon is from about 0.50 to about 0.99 weight percent of the spring and the alloying element comprises titanium, silicon, and copper, the titanium ranging from 0.001 to about 0.01 weight percent of the spring, the silicon ranging from 0.001 to less than 0.55 weight percent of the spring, and the copper ranging from 0.1 to about 0.3 weight percent of the spring, and wherein a total amount of the alloying element is from 0.001 to 2 weight percent of the spring.
12. The coil spring of claim 11 , wherein the alloying element further includes, as a weight percent of the spring, chromium from about 0.001% to about 1%.
13. The coil spring of claim 11 , wherein the alloying element further includes, as a weight percent of the spring, vanadium from about 0.001% to about 0.03%.
14. The coil spring of claim 11 , wherein the alloying element further includes, as a weight percent of the spring, sulfur less than about 0.05%, and molybdenum from about 0.001% to less than about 1.15%.
15. The coil spring of claim 11 , wherein the alloying element further includes, as a weight percent of the spring, niobium from about 0.001% to less than 0.01%.
16. The coil spring of claim 1 , wherein the alloying element further includes, as a weight percent of the spring, phosphorous less than 0.04%.
17. The coil spring of claim 1 , wherein the alloying element further includes, as a weight percent of the spring, aluminum that is about 0.003%.
18. A coil spring in an innerspring assembly in a cushioning article, comprising
a carbon steel wire coiled into a helical spring and alloyed with an alloying element, wherein the high carbon steel wire has a diameter of 0.04 to 0.11 inches (1.016 to 2.794 millimeters);
wherein the carbon is from about 0.50 to about 0.99 weight percent of the spring and the alloying element comprises titanium, aluminum, and copper, the titanium ranging from 0.001 to about 0.01 weight percent of the spring, the aluminum that is about 0.003 weight percent of the spring, and the copper ranging from 0.1 to about 0.3 weight percent of the spring, and wherein a total amount of the alloying element is from 0.001 to 2 weight percent of the spring.
19. The coil spring of claim 18 , wherein the alloying element further includes, as a weight percent, chromium ranging from about 0.001% to about 1%.
20. The coil spring of claim 18 , wherein the alloying element further includes, as a weight percent, silicon from about 0.001% to less than 0.55%.
