Abstract

A polymer comprising at least one type of repeat unit comprising at least one type of an optionally substituted indolocarbazole moiety and at least one divalent linkage.

Claims (31)

1. A polymer comprising a repeat unit, the repeat unit comprising at least one optionally substituted indolocarbazole moiety and at least one divalent linkage, the at least one divalent linkage consisting of at least one thienylene unit of structure (I):

wherein R 1 is independently selected from a hydrocarbon group, a heteroatom-containing group, and a halogen; and wherein m is 0, 1, or 2; and

wherein the heteroatom-containing group is selected from the group consisting of fluoroalkyl, fluoroaryl, cyano, nitro, carbonyl, carboxylate, amino, an alkoxy group, a heterocyclic group, an alkoxyaryl, an arylalkoxy, and a halogenated hydrocarbon.

2. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the repeat unit has from 1 to 6 of the optionally substituted indolocarbazole moieties; and the at least divalent linkage has a total of from 1 to 3 thienylene units.

3. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is formed from only the repeat unit, and the repeat unit consists of only one optionally substituted indolocarbazole moiety and only one divalent linkage.

4. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the at least one optionally substituted indolocarbazole moiety is independently selected from the structures (A), (B), (C), (D), (E), (F) and (G):

wherein for each of the structures (A) through (G), each R is independently selected from a group consisting of a hydrogen, a hydrocarbon group and a heteroatom-containing group, and wherein each of the structures (A) through (G) is optionally peripherally substituted; and

wherein the heteroatom-containing group is selected from the group consisting of fluoroalkyl, fluoroaryl, cyano, nitro, carbonyl, carboxylate, amino, an alkoxy group, a heterocyclic group, an alkoxyaryl, an arylalkoxy, and a halogenated hydrocarbon.

5. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is selected from the group consisting of:

and a mixture thereof,

wherein n is the number of repeat units.

6. A polymer selected from the group consisting of structures (13) and 14):

wherein n is the number of repeat units.

7. A polymer comprising a repeat unit, the repeat unit comprising at least one optionally substituted indolocarbazole moiety and at least one divalent linkage, the at least one divalent linkage consisting of at least one thienylene unit of structure (1):

wherein R 1 is independently selected from a hydrocarbon group, a heteroatom-containing group, and a halogen; and wherein m is 0, 1, or 2; and

wherein the heteroatom-containing group is selected from the group consisting of a fluoroalkyl group, a fluoroaryl group, a cyano group, a nitro group, a carbonyl group, a carboxylate group, an amino group, and an alkoxy group.

8. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is

wherein n is the number of repeat units.

9. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is

wherein n is the number of repeat units.

10. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the polymer is a mixture of

wherein n is the number of repeat units.

11. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the heteroatom-containing group is an alkoxy group.

12. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the heteroatom-containing group is a heterocyclic group.

13. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the heteroatom-containing group is an alkoxyaryl group.

14. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the heteroatom-containing group is an arylalkoxy group.

15. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the heteroatom-containing group is a halogenated hydrocarbon group.

16. The polymer of claim 12 , wherein the heterocyclic group is an optionally substituted carbazole group.

17. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the heteroatom-containing group has from 2 to about 200 atoms.

18. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the heteroatom-containing group has from 2 to about 100 atoms.

19. The polymer of claim 1 , wherein the hydrocarbon group is selected from the group consisting of a straight chain alkyl group, a branched alkyl group, a cylic aliphatic group, an aryl group, an alkylaryl group, and an arylalkyl group.
