Abstract

A web-based application constructor can be used constructing a web display. The web-based application constructor can obtain data from heterogeneous data sources having Web Services schemas to produce the web display. The web display can contain page components and can display the data from at least some heterogeneous data sources. A versioning system can keep track of changes to page components, page layouts, searches, and text to allow users to make changes without administrative approval. Users can annotate page components, page layouts, records, and text with comments.

Claims (55)

1 . A system comprising:

a web-based application constructor for constructing a web display, the web-based application constructor obtaining data from heterogeneous data sources to produce the web display;

the web display containing page components and displaying the data from at least some of the heterogeneous data sources; wherein the web-based application constructor allows users to annotate page components with comments visible in the web display.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the page components contain interactive elements.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein all page editing is versioned.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein whether a page component is displayed to a user is controlled by roles and security.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein page layout is versioned.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein versions of the page are stored at a remote server.

7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein AJAX at a browser sends version update information to a remote server.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the annotations are versioned.

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein a versioning system keeps track of changes to page components to allow users to make changes without administrative approval.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the versioning system keeps track of changes to page layout, searches, and text to allow users to make changes without administrative approval.

11 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a change control system to allow users to dynamically undo changes to page components while using the web-based application constructor.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the change control system further allow users to dynamically undo changes to page layout, searches, and text while using the web-based application constructor.

13 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the heterogeneous data sources have Web Services schemas.

14 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the users can further annotate page layouts, records, and text with comments.

15 . The system of claim 1 , wherein page components have their own URL.

16 . The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one page component is a view of data in a list.

17 . The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one page component is a view of data in a record.

18 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the display is constructed from available applications, wherein available applications can be dragged and dropped into page components.

19 . The system of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the heterogeneous data sources is a searchable resource and when the display provides for a search field into the searchable resource, the result of a search are shown in a page component of the display.

20 . The system of claim 1 , wherein page components has their own URLs and page components can be dragged and dropped to a new display.

21 . The system of claim 1 , wherein changes to a page component are propagated back to the application.

22 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the web-based application constructor provides roles to users that can be used to limit access to applications.

16 . A method comprising:

obtaining data from heterogeneous data sources having Web Services schemas to produce a web display, the web display containing page components and displaying the data from at least some heterogeneous data sources; and

allowing users to annotate page components with comments visible in the web display.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the page components contain interactive elements.

18 . The method of claim 16 wherein all page editing is versioned.

19 . The method of claim 16 , wherein whether a page component is displayed to a user is controlled by roles and security.

20 . The method of claim 16 , wherein page layout is versioned.

21 . The method of claim 16 , wherein versions of the page are stored at a remote server.

22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein AJAX at a browser sends version update information to a remote server.

23 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the annotations are versioned.

24 . The method of claim 16 , further comprising allowing users to annotate page layouts, records, and text with comments visible in the web display.

25 . The method of claim 16 , comprising keeping track of changes to page components to allow users to make changes without administrative approval.

26 . The method of claim 16 , further comprising keeping track of changes to page layout, searches, and text to allow users to make changes without administrative approval.

27 . The method of claim 16 , further comprising dynamically undoing changes to page components while using the web-based application constructor.

28 . The method of claim 27 , further comprising dynamically undoing changes to page layout, searches, and text while using the web-based application constructor.

29 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the heterogeneous data sources have Web Services schemas.

30 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the users can further annotate page layouts, records, and text with comments.

31 . The method of claim 16 , further comprising page templates to create the display.

32 . The method of claim 17 , wherein page components have their own URL.

33 . A computer readable medium comprising code to:

obtain data from heterogeneous data sources to produce a web display, the web display containing page components and displaying the data from at least some heterogeneous data sources; and

allow users to annotate page components with comments visible in the web display.

34 . The computer readable medium of claim 33 , wherein the page components contain interactive elements.

35 . The computer readable medium of claim 33 , wherein all page editing is versioned.

36 . The computer readable medium of claim 33 , wherein whether the page component is displayed to a user is controlled by roles and security.

37 . The computer readable medium of claim 33 , wherein page layout is versioned.

38 . The computer readable medium of claim 33 , wherein versions of the page are stored at a remote server.

39 . The computer readable medium of claim 38 , wherein AJAX at a browser sends version update information to a remote server.

40 . The computer readable medium of claim 33 , wherein the annotations are versioned.

41 . The computer readable medium of claim 33 , wherein the users can further annotate page layouts, records, and text with comments.

42 . The computer readable medium of claim 33 , wherein page components have their own URL.
