Abstract

A system for damping vibration in a drill string can include a valve assembly having a supply of a fluid, a first member, and a second member capable of moving in relation to first member in response to vibration of the drill bit. The first and second members define a first and a second chamber for holding the fluid. Fluid can flow between the first and second chambers in response to the movement of the second member in relation to the first member. The valve assembly can also include a coil or a valve for varying a resistance of the fluid to flow between the first and second chambers.

Claims (19)

1. A spring assembly for use in a drill string having a drill bit comprising:

a first member capable of being mechanically coupled to the drill bit so that the first member can translate in a first direction and an opposing second direction in response to the movement of the drill bit in the first and second directions;

a second member mechanically coupled to the first member so that the first member can translate in relation to the second member in the first and the second directions;

a spring stack disposed on one of the first and the second members, wherein a first end of the spring stack is substantially restrained and a second end of the spring stack translates in the first direction when the first member translates in the first direction in relation to the second member so that the spring stack is compressed, and a second end of the spring stack is substantially restrained and the first end of the spring stack translates in the second direction when the first member translates in the second direction in relation to the second member so that the spring stack is compressed, whereby the compression of the spring stack exerts a restoring force on the drill bit when it moves in both the first and second directions, wherein the spring stack comprises a first spring and a second spring positioned in series;

a first and a second spacer, wherein the first end of the spring stack urges the first spacer toward a coupling of a torsional bearing assembly when the first member translates in the first direction in relation to the second member so that the coupling restrains the first spacer and the first end of the spring stack, and the second end of the spring stack urges the second spacer toward a casing of a compensation module connected to the spring assembly when the first member translates in the second direction in relation to the second member so that the casing of the compensation module restrains the second spacer and the second end of the spring stack.

2. The spring assembly of claim 1 , wherein a spring constant of the first spring is less than a spring constant of the second spring.

3. The spring assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first and the second springs each comprise a Belleville spring.

4. A vibration damping system for use in a drill string for drilling a drill hole, comprising:

a torsional bearing assembly comprising a first member and a second member coupled to the first member so that the first member can translate in an up-hole and a down-hole direction in relation to the second member and torque can be transferred between the first and the second members;

a valve assembly comprising a first member securely coupled to the first member of the torsional bearing assembly so that the first member of the valve assembly translates in the up-hole and down-hole directions with the first member of the torsional bearing assembly; a second member securely coupled to the second member of the torsional bearing assembly so that the second member of the valve assembly translates in the up-hole and down-hole directions with the second member of the torsional bearing assembly, the first and second members of the valve assembly defining a first chamber and a second chamber for holding a supply of a fluid so that the fluid flows between the first and the second chambers in response to relative movement between the first and second members of the valve assembly; and means for varying a flow resistance of the fluid; and

a spring assembly comprising: (i) a first member securely coupled to the first member of the valve assembly so that the first member of the spring assembly translates in the up-hole and down-hole directions with the first member of the valve assembly; (ii) a second member securely coupled to the second member of the valve assembly the so that the second member of the spring assembly translates in the up-hole and down-hole directions with the second member of the valve assembly; and (iii) a spring for resisting relative movement between the first and second members of the spring assembly in the up-hole and down-hole directions.

5. The vibration damping system of claim 4 , wherein the spring comprises a first Belleville spring element and a second Belleville spring element positioned in series.

6. The vibration damping system according to claim 4 , wherein the first member of the spring assembly is securely coupled to said first member of the valve assembly by a coupling disposed between the first member of the spring assembly and said first member of the valve assembly.

7. A spring assembly for use in a drill string having a drill bit, comprising:

a first member capable of being mechanically coupled to the drill bit so that the first member can translate in a first direction and an opposing second direction in response to the movement of the drill bit in the first and second directions;

a second member mechanically coupled to the first member so that the first member can translate in relation to the second member in the first and the second directions; and

a spring stack disposed on one of the first and the second members, wherein a first end of the spring stack is substantially restrained and a second end of the spring stack translates in the first direction when the first member translates in the first direction in relation to the second member so that the spring stack is compressed, and a second end of the spring stack is substantially restrained and the first end of the spring stack translates in the second direction when the first member translates in the second direction in relation to the second member so that the spring stack is compressed, whereby the compression of the spring stack exerts a restoring force on the drill bit when it moves in both the first and second directions;

wherein the spring stack comprises a first spring and a second spring positioned in series; and

wherein the spring stack is disposed on one of the first and the second members so that a downhole force applied to the drill bit compresses the spring stack, and wherein the spring constants of the first and second springs are selected so that (i) at a first predetermined value of the downhole force on the drill bit neither the first or second springs are completely compressed and (ii) at a second predetermined value of the downhole force on the drill bit the first spring is completely compressed and the second spring is not completely compressed, the second predetermined value of the downhole force on the drill bit being greater than the first predetermined value; and (iii) a spring constant of the first spring is less than a spring constant of the second spring.
