Abstract

A system for manipulating energy transferred by members defining a joint. The system includes a first attachment structure configured to be attached to a first member of the joint and a second attachment structure configured to be attached to a second member of the joint. There is also an adjustable energy absorbing device attached to the first attachment structure and second attachment structure, wherein adjusting the energy absorbing device changes the load manipulating characteristics of the energy absorbing device.

Claims (28)

1. An implantable system for manipulating energy transferred by members defining a knee joint, the members defining a natural path of motion, comprising:

a first attachment structure configured to be attached to a first member of the knee joint,

a second attachment structure configured to be attached to a second member of the knee joint, and

an adjustable energy absorbing device attached to the first attachment structure and second attachment structure, the adjustable energy absorbing device includes an energy absorbing component configured about a shaft and a spacer assembly configured to be translated along and longitudinally fixed onto the shaft to alter an amount of load the energy absorbing component accommodates.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the spacer assembly is biased by a spring.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the energy absorbing component includes an elastomeric member.

4. An implantable system for manipulating energy transferred by members defining a joint, comprising:

a first attachment structure configured to be attached to a first member of the joint;

a second attachment structure configured to be attached to a second member of the joint; and

an adjustable energy absorbing device attached to the first attachment structure and second attachment structure, the adjustable energy absorbing device includes an energy absorbing component configured about a shaft and a spacer assembly configured to be translated along the shaft to alter functioning of the energy absorbing component,

wherein the spacer assembly includes a nut and a transversely configured pin, the nut including a keyed recess for lockingly engaging with the pin.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the pin extends through a spacer of the spacer assembly and is accessible through a domed cover.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the nut is biased by a spring and the spacer of the spacer assembly is locked in relation to the nut upon advancement of the pin within the keyed recess of the nut.

7. An implantable system for manipulating energy transferred by members defining a knee joint, the members defining a natural path of motion, comprising:

a first attachment structure configured to be attached to a first member of the knee joint;

a second attachment structure configured to be attached to a second member of the knee joint; and

an adjustable energy manipulation device attached to the first attachment structure and second attachment structure, the adjustable energy manipulation device includes an arbor being slidingly engaged with a piston, an assembly disposed over a shaft of the arbor or piston being configured to lock onto one of a plurality of positions along a length of the shaft, and a compression spring disposed over the shaft between the assembly and a base of the piston;

wherein the assembly can be repositioned and locked on the arbor shaft to adjust the amount of load the energy manipulation device can manipulate by changing the compression of the spring.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the joint is a knee joint affected with osteoarthritis and variable amounts of energy absorption occurs while the members follow a path of motion.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the adjustable energy manipulation device includes a first spring and a second spring disposed over a first arbor shaft and a second arbor shaft, respectively.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein the assembly is a spring loaded stop collar.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein there is less energy absorption occurring through greater flexion of members defining the joint.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein there is less energy absorption occurring through greater flexion of members defining the joint.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first and second attachment structures are configured to be attached to bones on opposite sides of a knee joint and the energy manipulation device is configured to be located across the knee joint.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the energy absorbing component includes as least two side by side springs each configured about a shaft and the spacer assembly is configured to be translated along the shafts.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the at least two side by side energy absorbing components are arranged about the shafts in a side by side, parallel, non-coaxial arrangement.

16. The system of claim 4 , wherein the first and second attachment structures are configured to be attached to bones on opposite sides of a knee joint and the energy manipulation device is configured to be located across the knee joint.

17. The system of claim 7 , wherein the energy manipulation device is configured to be located across the knee joint.
