SURGICAL IMPLANTATION METHOD AND DEVICES FOR AN EXTRA-ARTICULAR MECHANICAL ENERGY ABSORBING APPARATUS
A surgical implantation approach for preparing a patient and precisely and effectively placing an energy absorbing apparatus relative to the patient's anatomy. Various surgical implantation apparatus and methods for achieving proper device-to-anatomy juxtapositional relationships are employed in the implantation approach.
1 . A method of implanting a medical device across an articulating joint, comprising:
implanting a first base component on a first bone of the joint;
implanting a second base component on a second bone of the joint; and
forming a tunnel between the first and second base components;
flexing the articulating joint between flexion and extension positions; and
ensuring that the tunnel provides adequate space when members defining the joint are in both flexion and extension.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the elongate handle includes a pusher member and an outer cover, and the handle assembly is sized and shaped to receive a link assembly.
3 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising attaching ends of the link assembly to the first and second base components.
4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the pusher member facilitates ejecting the link assembly from the cover.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the link assembly is a dummy assembly used for sizing.
6 . A method of positioning first and second components of a medical device on opposite sides of an articulating joint using an extendable locating device, comprising:
gaining access to a first and a second implantation site on opposite sides of the joint;
placing a first component at the first implantation site and placing a second component at the second implantation site;
positioning the locating device between the first and second components;
configuring a first portion of the locating device outside of a patient's skin;
attaching a second portion of the locating device to the first component, the attaching occurring below an outside surface of the skin;
attaching a third portion of the locating device to the second component, the attached occurring below an outside surface of the skin;
articulating members defining the joint; and
identifying an extent to which the locating device extends.
7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein identifying the extent to which the location device extends facilitates identifying placement of the first and second components at the articulating joint.
8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein identifying the extent to which the location device extends facilitates selection of a link assembly for attachment between the first and second components.
