Abstract

This invention provides compositions and methods for genetic testing of an organism and for correlating the results of the genetic testing with a unique marker that unambiguously identifies the organism. The markers may be internal markers, such as for example single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), short tandem repeats (STRs), or other sites within a genomic locus. Alternatively, the markers may be external, such that they are separately added to the genetic sample before testing.

Claims (13)

1. A chip for analyzing reactive antibodies in a patient blood or serum sample and for identifying said patient providing the sample, said chip comprising:

a set of oligonucleotides wherein members of the set have different sequences and said members are attached to beads which are associated with an optically distinguishable characteristic that identifies the sequences of the oligonucleotides attached thereto, the set of oligonucleotides for identifying a number of marker sequences in the patient genomic sample, said marker sequences each including at least one polymorphic marker, the identification of said marker sequences providing for identification of said patient; and

blood-group antigens, A, B, and Rh, each attached to differently encoded beads which are associated with an optically distinguishable characteristic that identifies the antigen attached thereto.

2. The chip of claim 1 , wherein the mixture of beads is arranged as random planar arrays on the chip, and the position of individual beads in the arrays are not pre-determined.

3. The chip of claim 2 , wherein the chip is a silicon chip.

4. The chip of claim 1 wherein oligonucleotides in the set are capable of annealing with nucleic acid sequences derived from the patient.

5. The chip of claim 4 wherein the nucleic acid sequences are derived by amplification of one or more nucleic acid subsequences within the patient's genome.

6. The chip of claim 5 wherein the set of oligonucleotides includes members, that are capable of being elongated following annealing, by incorporation of one or more types of deoxyribonucleotide triphosphates or di-deoxyribonucleotide triphosphates.

7. The chip of claim 6 wherein a fraction of at least one type of deoxyribonucleotide triphosphate or di-deoxyribonucleotide triphosphate is labeled so as to generate an optically detectable signature associated with the elongation product following incorporation.

8. The chip of claim 7 , wherein the optically-detectable labels are fluorophore dyes.

9. The chip of claim 1 wherein the optically-detectable characteristic permits discrimination of individual beads.

10. The chip of claim 2 wherein images of the bead arrays show the position of individual beads within the random planar arrays.

11. The chip of claim 2 wherein beads associated with both the set of oligonucleotides and the antigens are randomly placed in the planar arrays.
