Abstract

Disclosed herein is a thermoplastic composition comprising: a poly(arylene ether); a poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin, an organophosphate ester flame retardant, and tricalcium phosphate. The composition may further comprise a reinforcing filler, black pigment, or combination thereof.

Claims (87)

1 . A thermoplastic composition comprising:

45 to 65 weight percent of a poly(arylene ether);

10 to 30 weight percent of a poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin;

1 to 8 weight percent of tricalcium phosphate;

3 to 15 weight percent of an organophosphate ester flame retardant;

5 to 10 weight percent of titanium dioxide; and

3 to 15 weight percent of a reinforcing filler,

wherein weight percent is based on the total weight of the composition, and

wherein the composition has a CTI of greater than or equal to 350 volts as determined by IEC60112.

The composition of claim 1 , wherein the poly(arylene ether) is present in an amount of 50 to 60 weight percent, the poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin is present in an amount of 15 to 25 weight percent, the tricalcium phosphate is present in an amount of 2 to 8 weight percent, the titanium dioxide is present in an amount of 6 to 9 weight percent, the organophosphate ester flame retardant is present in an amount of 4 to 13 weight percent, and the reinforcing filler is present in an amount of 4 to 13 weight percent, wherein weight percent is based on the total weight of the composition.

3 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin comprises high impact polystyrene.

4 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the tricalcium phosphate has an average particle size of 1 to 10 micrometers.

5 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the titanium dioxide has an average particle size of 0.1 to 5.0 micrometers.

6 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the organophosphate ester flame retardant is selected from the group consisting of resorcinol bis-diphenylphosphate, bis-phenol A bis-diphenylphosphate, their polymeric counterparts, and combinations comprising two or more of the foregoing.

7 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition has a Vicat B 120 value of 145° C. to 165° C.

8 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the CTI is less than or equal to 800 volts.

9 . A thermoplastic composition comprising:

60 to 85 weight percent of a poly(arylene ether);

7 to 35 weight percent of a poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin;

1 to 8 weight percent of tricalcium phosphate; and

5 to 15 weight percent of organophosphate ester flame retardant,

wherein weight percent is based on the total weight of the composition, and

wherein the composition has a CTI of greater than or equal to 240 volts as determined by IEC60112.

10 . The composition of claim 9 , wherein the composition further comprises 0.5 to 2 weight percent of a black coloration compound based on the total weight of the composition.

The composition of claim 10 , wherein the poly(arylene ether) is present in an amount of 60 to 85 weight percent, the poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin is present in an amount of 10 to 30 weight percent, the tricalcium phosphate is present in an amount of 2 to 8 weight percent, the organophosphate ester flame retardant is present in an amount of 6 to 13 weight percent, and the black coloration component is present in an amount of 0.75 to 1.5 weight percent, wherein weight percent is based on the total weight of the composition.

12 . The composition of claim 10 , wherein the black coloration component comprises a pigment.

13 . The composition of claim 10 , wherein the black coloration component comprises a combination of dyes.

14 . The composition of claim 9 , wherein the poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin comprises high impact polystyrene.

15 . The composition of claim 9 , wherein the poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin comprises homopolymer of an alkenyl aromatic monomer and a block copolymer wherein the block copolymer comprises a poly(alkenyl aromatic) block.

16 . The composition of claim 9 , wherein the tricalcium phosphate has an average particle size of 1 to 10 micrometers.

17 . The composition of claim 9 , wherein the organophosphate ester flame retardant is selected from the group consisting of resorcinol bis-diphenylphosphate, bis-phenol A bis-diphenylphosphate, their polymeric counterparts, and combinations comprising two or more of the foregoing.

18 . The composition of claim 9 , wherein the CTI is less than or equal to 600 volts.

19 . The composition of claim 9 , wherein the composition is free of glass fiber.

20 . An article comprising a thermoplastic composition, wherein the thermoplastic composition comprises:

45 to 65 weight percent of a poly(arylene ether);

10 to 30 weight percent of a poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin;

1 to 8 weight percent of tricalcium phosphate;

3 to 15 weight percent of an organophosphate ester flame retardant;

3 to 10 weight percent titanium dioxide; and

3 to 15 weight percent of a reinforcing filler,

wherein weight percent is based on the total weight of the composition, and

wherein the composition has a CTI of greater than or equal to 350 volts as determined by IEC60112.

The article of claim 20 , wherein the poly(arylene ether) is present in an amount of 50 to 60 weight percent, the poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin is present in an amount of 15 to 25 weight percent, the tricalcium phosphate is present in an amount of 2 to 8 weight percent, the titanium dioxide is present in an amount of 6 to 9 weight percent, the organophosphate ester flame retardant is present in an amount of 4 to 13 weight percent, and the reinforcing filler is present in an amount of 4 to 13 weight percent, wherein weight percent is based on the total weight of the composition.

22 . The article of claim 20 , wherein the tricalcium phosphate has an average particle size of 1 to 10 micrometers and the titanium dioxide has an average particle size of 0.1 to 5.0 micrometers.

23 . The article of claim 20 , wherein the organophosphate ester flame retardant is selected from the group consisting of resorcinol bis-diphenylphosphate, bis-phenol A bis-diphenylphosphate, their polymeric counterparts, and combinations comprising two or more of the foregoing.

24 . An article comprising a thermoplastic composition, wherein the thermoplastic composition comprises:

60 to 85 weight percent of a poly(arylene ether);

7 to 35 weight percent of a poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin;

1 to 8 weight percent of tricalcium phosphate; and

5 to 15 weight percent of organophosphate ester flame retardant,

wherein weight percent is based on the total weight of the composition, and

wherein the composition has a CTI of greater than or equal to 240 volts as determined by IEC60112.

25 . The article of claim 24 , wherein the thermoplastic component further comprises 0.5 to 2 weight percent of a black coloration component, based on the total weight of the composition.

The article of claim 25 , wherein the poly(arylene ether) is present in an amount of 60 to 85 weight percent, the poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin is present in an amount of 10 to 30 weight percent, the tricalcium phosphate is present in an amount of 2 to 8 weight percent, the organophosphate ester flame retardant is present in an amount of 6 to 13 weight percent, and the black coloration component is present in an amount of 0.75 to 1.5 weight percent, wherein weight percent is based on the total weight of the composition.

27 . The article of claim 25 , wherein the black coloration component comprises a pigment.

28 . The article of claim 25 , wherein the black coloration component comprises a combination of dyes.

29 . The article of claim 24 , wherein the poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin comprises high impact polystyrene and the tricalcium phosphate has an average particle size of 1 to 10 micrometers.

30 . The article of claim 24 , wherein the poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin comprises homopolymer of an alkenyl aromatic monomer and a block copolymer wherein the block copolymer comprises a poly(alkenyl aromatic) block.

31 . The article of claim 24 , wherein the composition is free of glass fiber.

32 . A thermoplastic composition comprising:

60 to 90 weight percent of a poly(arylene ether);

1 to 10 weight percent of a block copolymer;

1 to 8 weight percent of tricalcium phosphate; and

5 to 20 weight percent of organophosphate ester flame retardant,

wherein weight percent is based on the total weight of the composition, and

wherein the composition has a CTI of greater than or equal to 240 volts as determined by IEC60112.

33 . The composition of claim 32 , wherein the composition further comprises 0.5 to 2 weight percent of a black coloration component.

34 . The composition of claim 32 , wherein the tricalcium phosphate has an average particle size of 1 to 10 micrometers.

35 . The composition of claim 32 , wherein the organophosphate ester flame retardant is selected from the group consisting of resorcinol bis-diphenylphosphate, bis-phenol A bis-diphenylphosphate, their polymeric counterparts, and combinations comprising two or more of the foregoing.

36 . The composition of claim 32 , wherein the composition has a Vicat B 120 value of 145° C. to 165° C.

37 . The composition of claim 32 further comprising 1 to 5 weight percent of a poly(alkenyl aromatic) resin different from the block polymer based on the total weight of the composition

38 . The composition of claim 32 , wherein the block copolymer comprises polystyrene-poly(ethylene-butylene)-polystyrene.

39 . The composition of claim 32 , wherein the CTI is less than or equal to 600 volts.

40 . The composition of claim 32 , wherein the composition is free of glass fiber.

41 . An article comprising a thermoplastic composition, wherein the thermoplastic composition comprises:

60 to 90 weight percent of a poly(arylene ether);

1 to 10 weight percent of a block copolymer;

1 to 8 weight percent of tricalcium phosphate; and

5 to 20 weight percent of organophosphate ester flame retardant,

wherein weight percent is based on the total weight of the composition, and

wherein the composition has a CTI of greater than or equal to 240 volts as determined by IEC60112.

42 . The article of claim 41 , wherein the thermoplastic composition further comprises 0.5 to 2 weight percent of a black coloration component.

43 . The article of claim 41 , wherein the tricalcium phosphate has an average particle size of 1 to 10 micrometers.

44 . The article of claim 41 , wherein the organophosphate ester flame retardant is selected from the group consisting of resorcinol bis-diphenylphosphate, bis-phenol A bis-diphenylphosphate, their polymeric counterparts, and combinations comprising two or more of the foregoing.

45 . The article of claim 41 , wherein the composition has a Vicat B 120 value of 145° C. to 165° C.

46 . The article of claim 41 , wherein the block copolymer comprises polystyrene-poly(ethylene-butylene)-polystyrene.

47 . The article of claim 41 , wherein the composition is free of glass fiber.
