Abstract

A method for making a feed structure for an antenna may include providing a polarizer body having a polarizer sidewall extending longitudinally between spaced apart ends. A portion of the polarizer sidewall is deformed to provide at least one polarizing structure that extends radially inwardly along an interior of the polarizer sidewall relative to adjacent portions of the polarizer sidewall. The method thus can be utilized to produce an antenna structure.

Claims (16)

1. A method of making an antenna structure, comprising:

providing a mandrel that comprises at least one female mandrel member dimensioned and configured to shape at least one corresponding polarizing structure in a sidewall of a polarizer body; and

positioning the mandrel within the sidewall of the polarizer body; and

deforming a portion of the polarizer sidewall against the at least one female mandrel member positioned within the sidewall to provide at least one polarizing structure of along an interior of the polarizer sidewall relative to adjacent portions of the polarizer sidewall.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one female mandrel member further comprises at least one concave feature formed in a side surface of the mandrel, such that the deformation of the sidewall causes the at least one polarizing structure to be formed according to a configuration of the concave feature that is formed in the side surface of the mandrel.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the at least one feature of the at least one female mandrel member is contoured according to a first radius in a longitudinal direction of the mandrel and a second radius in a transverse direction relative to the longitudinal direction, the first and second radii being different.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the concave feature of the at least one female mandrel member has a substantially smooth and continuous surface, such that deformation of the sidewall causes the at least one polarizing structure to be formed with a substantially smooth surface corresponding to a configuration of the concave feature that is formed in the side surface of the mandrel.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one female mandrel member comprises a receptacle having a shape that is one of semi-torus, semi-ellipsoidal and semi-spheroidal, such that the deformation of the sidewall causes the at least one polarizing structure to be formed according to the shape of the receptacle.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming a transition stage near a distal one of the spaced apart ends of the polarizer sidewall.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the transition stage is integrally formed from the same single piece of material as the sidewall of the polarizer body.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising forming a horn body that extends from a proximal one of the spaced apart ends of the polarizer sidewall, the polarizer body, the transition stage and the horn body being integrally formed from the same single piece of material.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing a single piece of material that defines the polarizer body, the polarizer body having a sidewall that extending longitudinally between spaced apart ends thereof; and

the at least one polarizing structure is formed as an inward extension of the polarizer sidewall along an interior of the polarizer sidewall, the at least one polarizing structure being formed of the single piece of material without any other structure being added to the sidewall.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the deformation further comprises deforming the portion of the polarizer sidewall radially inwardly relative to adjacent portions of the polarizer sidewall so that the at least one polarizing structure comprises a substantially smooth and continuous radially inward deformation within the interior of the polarizer sidewall.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising forming a horn body to extend from a proximal one of the spaced apart ends of the polarizer sidewall, the polarizer body and the horn body being integrally formed from the same single piece of material.
