Abstract

A battery powered wireless fluid pressure sensor has a sealed chamber which can be vented to the outside atmosphere through a re-sealable reference port to allow a user to set the reference atmosphere inside the pressure sensor enabling the pressure sensor to provide absolute, gauge and true gauge pressure readings. The sensor calculates and transmits the fluid pressure taking into account the temperature of the pressure transducer, the temperature of the electronic devices and the barometric pressure inside the sealed chamber to provide accurate pressure measurements over a wide range of operating conditions.

Claims (39)

1. A method of measuring the pressure at a port on a pressure sensor comprising the steps of:

a) detecting the pressure on a pressure sensor element and the temperature of said pressure sensor element in said pressure sensor; and

b) interpolating said detected pressure and said detected temperature based on calibrated pressures and temperatures of said pressure sensor to determine the pressure at said port.

2. The method set forth in claim 1 further including the following steps prior to step a) of claim 1 :

a) determining the magnitude of a temperature change between the temperature of a first electronic component in said pressure sensor to a stored temperature; and

b) if said magnitude of said temperature change is greater than a predetermined amount, recalibrating a second electronic component in said pressure sensor and replacing said stored temperature with the temperature of said first electronic component.

3. The method set forth in claim 2 wherein said first component and said second component are the same component.

4. The method set forth in claim 3 wherein said first component and said second component are a microcontroller.

5. The method set forth in claim 2 wherein said predetermined amount is 20° C.

6. The method set forth in claim 1 wherein said calibrated pressures and temperatures of said pressure sensor are obtained using a calibration procedure which includes:

providing a temperature sensing device for measuring the temperature of said pressure sensing element;

applying zero gauge pressure to said pressure sensor at 21° C.;

reading and storing the resistance of said temperature sensing device;

reading and storing the pressure from said pressure sensing element; and

increasing the pressure on said pressure sensor, wherein the pressure on said pressure sensing element is read and stored as the pressure in said pressure sensor is increased.

7. The method set forth in claim 6 wherein the pressure in said pressure sensor is increased incrementally.

8. The method set forth in claim 7 wherein said increments are equal to 20 percent of a maximum pressure of said pressure sensor.

9. The method set forth in claim 8 wherein said pressure on said pressure sensor is increased until a maximum pressure is applied to said pressure sensor.

10. The method set forth in claim 6 wherein said pressure on said pressure sensor is increased until a maximum pressure is applied to said pressure sensor.

11. The method set forth in claim 6 wherein said calibration procedure further includes:

decreasing the temperature of said pressure sensor;

applying zero gauge pressure to said pressure sensor;

reading and storing the resistance of said temperature sensing device; and

reading and storing the pressure from said pressure sensing element.

12. The method set forth in claim 11 wherein the temperature of said pressure sensor is decreased to −40° C.

13. The method set forth in claim 11 wherein the pressure in said pressure sensor is increased incrementally.

14. The method set forth in claim 13 wherein said increments are equal to 20 percent of a maximum pressure of said pressure sensor.

15. The method set forth in claim 14 wherein said pressure on said pressure sensor is increased until a maximum pressure is applied to said pressure sensor.

16. The method set forth in claim 11 wherein said pressure on said pressure sensor is increased until a maximum pressure is applied to said pressure sensor.

17. The method set forth in claim 6 wherein said calibration procedure further includes:

increasing the temperature of said pressure sensor;

applying zero gauge pressure to said pressure sensor;

reading and storing the resistance of said temperature sensing device; and

reading and storing the pressure from said pressure sensing element.

18. The method set forth in claim 17 wherein the temperature of said pressure sensor is increased to 85° C.

19. The method set forth in claim 17 wherein the pressure in said pressure sensor is increased incrementally.

20. The method set forth in claim 19 wherein said increments are equal to 20 percent of a maximum pressure of said pressure sensor.

21. The method set forth in claim 20 wherein said pressure on said pressure sensor is increased until a maximum pressure is applied to said pressure sensor.

22. The method set forth in claim 17 wherein said pressure on said pressure sensor is increased until a maximum pressure is applied to said pressure sensor.
