Abstract

A nozzle arrangement for an inkjet printer is provided. The arrangement includes a wafer substrate defining a supply channel, and chamber side and roof walls positioned on the substrate, said walls defining a nozzle chamber operatively supplied with ink via the supply channel, with a nozzle rim defined in the roof wall. The arrangement also includes an actuator device passing through a slot in a side wall of the chamber, the device configured to operatively eject ink from the nozzle rim. Also included is an actuator slot protection barrier mounted on the actuator device proximate the slot and configured to reduce ink wicking on the nozzle rim during ejection of ink from the nozzle rim.

Claims (11)

1. A nozzle arrangement for an inkjet printer, said arrangement comprising:

a wafer substrate defining a supply channel;

chamber side and roof walls positioned on the substrate, said walls defining a nozzle chamber operatively supplied with ink via the supply channel, a nozzle rim defined in the roof wall;

an actuator device passing through a slot in a side wall of the chamber, the device configured to operatively eject ink from the nozzle rim; and

an actuator slot protection barrier mounted on the actuator device proximate the slot and configured to reduce ink wicking on the nozzle rim during ejection of ink from the nozzle rim.

2. The nozzle arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the actuator device includes a thermal bend actuator attached to a post adjacent the ink chamber and includes a conductive heater portion which is normally balanced with a corresponding layer in thermal equilibrium.

3. The nozzle arrangement of claim 2 , wherein the actuator passes through the slot in the wall of the nozzle chamber and forms a nozzle ejection paddle inside the ink chamber.

The nozzle arrangement of claim 3 , which is configured so that during operation, ink flows out of the nozzle chamber to form a layer between the slot in the wall and the actuator slot protection barrier, the protection barrier profiled to substantially mate with the slot but to be slightly spaced apart therefrom so that any ink meniscus formed between the barrier and side wall is of relatively small dimensions.

5. The nozzle arrangement of claim 2 , wherein the heater portion of the actuator is heated electrically so as to undergo a rapid expansion which in turn results in the rapid upward movement of the paddle.

6. The nozzle arrangement of claim 3 , wherein the paddle includes a poker protrusion moving up through the plane of the nozzle rim so as to assist in the ejection of any debris which may be in vicinity of the nozzle rim.

7. The nozzle arrangement of claim 4 , wherein the movement of the actuator results in a slight movement of the actuator slot protection barrier which maintains substantially the small dimensioned meniscus thereby reducing the opportunity for ink wicking along the nozzle rim.
